search engines and my site

I am not very good with this sort of thing , I want search engines to find my site i have followed the steps but must be doing something wrong as when i try to verify the site through google webmaster tools it says unable to verify

Now i havent a clue ! could somebody give me a hand maybe a step by step guide ?
