Code for new PM, login/logout, etc. (navbar)

Hello!

I had the idea of making a custom navbar for my forum, though there is a problem that I am seeming to be faced with! I wanted to put the navbar I am creating in a widget with HTML or such, or elsewhere. The problem is, I can't figure out the code (or find a code) for items such as "new pm" (for an image to appear when a new PM has come), or for a login only when not logged in, log out only when logged in. I hope this is making sense. (:
