Solved Connecting my own domain name

Post by Daryn April 26th 2014, 5:08 pm

Hi all hoping you can help me out here.

Ive had a forum for along time also got a main website. My main domain name is connected to the main website and their is a link to the forum. Now what Im hoping to do is keep the forum domain but also have my main domain connected directly to the forum and get rid of the main site..

So the questions are ......

1) Can I keep the free forumsmotion domain name thats already connected plus connect my own main domain name connected at the same time, basically 2 domains for 1 forum.

2) How much will it cost me to connect my own domain name to the forum as well as keep the original free one.

Many thanks in advance

Hello,

For external domains, please read this:
https://help.forumotion.com/t7021-redirect-an-extern-domain-name-that-you-own-to-your-board

Once successful with the procedures, you can access your forum via the original/default domain name and the redirected domain name.

Sorry to be a pain but Ive looked at the link you give me and Im still unsure about the cost. I know you have to pay per year for purchasing a domain from Forumotion is it the same cost for an external domain purchased from godaddy.

Sorry for the confusion Jophy but that doesn't answer the question.

I already own a domain name that I bought years ago from godaddy and its been connected to my main website since 2011.

Ive now cancelled my main website and now want to connect that domain name to my forumotion.

So can you tell me how many credits if any I have to purchase to do this please.

I'm not sure about the specific cost, I'll forward your topic to our pro admin to answer. She'll be back by Monday.

Thanks

Hello

There is no additional cost to add an external domaine name on your Forumotion forum (via CNAME)
You just have to follow the tutorial provide by Jophy

Thanks Buttercup really appreciate the reply. I tried to point it to my forum but just doesnt seem to want to connect for some reason. I dont totally understand how it works TBH, do you know if it needs hosting or something like that. I will contact godaddy and see what is wrong, if their is no addition payment Im sure I can take up one of the other services from forumotion regarding my forum just to support in some way.

Many thanks Daryn

Hello ^^

I am not sure to understand.

Do you already have a custom domain name on your forum, or is it its basic url ( http://majorcaforum.forumsmotion.com/ )

Anyway, on Godaddy's control panel you must not choose Record type A (host) but the last one
-> CNAME (Alias)

This CNAME entry should redirect to
- http://majorcaforum.forumsmotion.com if you don't have customized domain name on your forum
- http://www.yourdomainname.com if you had already a customized domain name.
