    Solved Forum technical issues.

    Post by Sirenapples April 22nd 2015, 7:01 am

    My forum is very awkward.  There are a number of problems,  such as how middle mouse button doesn't open things in new tabs but opens on the current tab instead.

    But the biggest problem,  very very problematic since it's supposed to be an RP site,  is that randomly the text editor will refresh the page and say "No post mode specified",  making the individual lose all their work on their post.   This is usually triggered by using the tools in the text editor itself.  Such as going to try to change size,  only for it to blink and suddenly "no post mode specified".

    The forum type is Invision.

    What could be causing this?

    Normally if you click with the middle mouse button it will open the link in a new tab.  On my forum for some reason,  doing so opens the link in the same tab as though you clicked normally.

    Also,  sorry for the rushyness of the post,  I was rushed because the dogs were barking outside... at 1AM... in the middle of a quiet neighborhood...

    Edit:
    My forum just did it once again.  Members shouldn't have to copy all their work every ten seconds for fear of losing everything.  I just lost a post when I tried to enter an Alt key code (For symbols and such).

    Hi There,

    First of you need to post an announcement on your forum asking your members if they are experiencing the same issues as you, if yes or no try and suggest clearing your browsers cache.

    Hope this help :]

    Piece of junk randomly,  randomly,  refreshes the page and displays "No post mode specified" when you try to interact with the editor tools.

    This is a major problem that needs to stop.   This is supposed to be a -writing- site,  with heavy usage of the text editor for the layouts of people's posts. Bolding.  Colors.  Sizes,  ect.

    Though some new info:
    In trying to force the error to occur just now to get the screenshot later in this post, I noticed it wouldn't trigger at first until I previewed. After previewing, the problem then occurred almost immediately afterwards (When using the editor tools).

    This actually runs completely contrary to normal behavior when making a post, in which Previewing a post periodically will actually -save- the post, allowing you to usually click the back arrow or something, or simply reload the page, to recover the post you were working on...
    Now apparently it primes your post for self-destruction.
    I'll try to make more posts and see how frequently this occurs and what not. If it doesn't happen at all prior to a Preview, I could just include it in the forum rules "Don't preview posts. Just post and edit from there" or something...

    Some browsers respond to the mouse middle click differently, and can be changed in the browser settings.

    Also however you can also have links open in a new tag by using this code when ever posting a link in html:

    Code:
    < a href="http://www.exapmle.com" TARGET="_blank> Link text </a>

    You might want to give this code a try in your javascript and see if it, opens the links in a new tab.
    Code:
    $('a').each(function() {
      var a = new RegExp('/' + window.location.host + '/');
      if(!a.test(this.href)) {
          $(this).click(function(event) {
              event.preventDefault();
              event.stopPropagation();
              window.open(this.href, '_blank');
          });
      }
    });

    It's only my forum that does it.  I don't remember any other site ever doing it.

    The javascript didn't do anything.

    But it's just a minor inconvenience I tossed out there as an example of how generally misbehaving my forum is.   I might have to remake it entirely using a different forum version.  But I'd never be able to recreate it's looks,  I don't think...

    @Sirenapples I would really like to inspect your forum to get to the root of the problem, if it's possible for you to provide your forum URL to me ? Without, I'm not going to be able to determine if anything is causing it, such as installed JavaScripts or other modifications.

    Thanks Wink

    Thanks Wink

    I'm not comfortable linking it for some reason...   Somewhat embarrassing.  It almost feels comparable thinking about sending a nude... (Though nothing of that nature takes place there. It's just a comparison of awkwardness XD )

    I have a music bar Widget,  it was a code I put into an otherwise blank widget that makes a music bar show up at the top of the forum.  Before I knew about the javascript section.

    I have some stuff in the Colors css thingy to center things in the user profile space beside posts.   I have another code to make the emoticons appear on the LEFT side of the posts instead of the right,  to keep the text editor centered instead of pushed against the left of the forum.  (I'd rather somehow keep it centered and have emotes in the text editor options stuff instead.   It's kind of annoying.)   And I have a javascript thingy to have a Chatbox button in the corner of the forum so people can use it anywhere.

    That should be everything I've done to it.

    Popup chat.
    Code:

    jQuery(document).ready(function(){
    jQuery('body').append('<span id="chatButton" title="Open/Close Chatbox">Open Chat</span><div id="chatBox"><iframe src="/chatbox/index.forum"></iframe></div>');
    jQuery('#chatBox').hide();
    jQuery('#chatButton').css('position', 'fixed').css('right', '20px').css('bottom', '20px');
    jQuery('#chatBox iframe').css('position', 'fixed').css('right', '10px').css('bottom', '45px');
    if(!document.getElementById('logout')){
    jQuery('#chatButton').hide();
    jQuery('#chatBox').hide();}
    jQuery('#chatButton').click(function(){
    jQuery('#chatBox').fadeToggle();
    });
    });

    Music
    Code:

    <script data-config="{'skin':'skins/cyber/skin.css','volume':50,'autoplay':false,'shuffle':true,'repeat':1,'placement':'top','showplaylist':false,'playlist':'http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLVt7dgGgOyhNXVUnUSxe-Fw1jdNPC8sEM'}" src="http://scmplayer.net/script.js" type="text/javascript"></script>

    Colors.
    I'm not exactly sure what's what. I think this is everything I added to Colors.   I think it's 3 separate things.  I'm 90% sure everything I did was added to the end,  the very bottom.
    Code:

    #smiley-box{
    float:left;
    margin-right:-270px;
    width:200px;
    }
    .sceditor-container{
    float:left;
    margin-left:205px !important;
    }

    .postprofile dt, .postprofile dt + dd { text-align:center; }

    .postprofile dt strong a {
        font-size: 2em !important  ;
    }

    .postprofile {
      color:#FFF;
    }

    .postprofile table { margin:0 auto }

    a[href="/u1"]{
    text-decoration: none !important;
    text-shadow: 0 0 0.2em purple, 0 0 0.2em purple, 0 0 0.2em purple;
    }

    The SCM player is most likely causing the glitches you see. The problem is that it displays the forum inside an IFRAME rather than the actual browser window. ( doesn't retain proper datas ) This can cause the address bar to display the incorrect location and prevent _blank target links from functioning properly, among other issues as well. Try disabling the music player temporarily to see if the problems you're experiencing persist without it.

    I was just pressing buttons randomly in the editor before and after previewing after removing the music bar, and it hasn't eaten the post yet. That might be the fix.

    Is the problem that music bar specifically? Or would a small optional widget thing, as in in-widget and not displaying at the top, have the same problem?

    From my personal experience, I used to be a part of a forum that used the SCM music player. I noticed many glitches one being buttons not reacting as they should, data being lost, and links not opening in new tabs. We eventually disabled it and placed it elsewhere on its own page for people to use whenever they want.

    It's good if you want music, but that one specifically can cause numerous problems with the forum. A widget that doesn't force the forum into an iframe shouldn't cause any troubles, however it wont be seamless. blackeye

    Woa, you're right. Just middle-clicked after reading that and that's fixed as well.

    I guess it's all fixed then. That one music bar really messed the whole thing up it seems. It's removal seems to have made the site dozens of times more stable.
