Bots and advertising (includes bot names, emails)

Recently i had a bot come onto my forum and make a advertisement. I moved it to my trash. I was wondering if there's a way to make that weird font with the wavy text to make sure your not a machine. I have seen this on other site's and i was wondering if this is possible on editboard? thx.

Unfortunately, some bots evolved and some of them are now able to read the text of these codes.

I will stick this topic, since this problem concerns everyone. I will edit my post to list the bots we encounter.

For everyone - the common characteristics of the spambots

- Birthdate : 28 March 1983 (if you made the birthdate compulsory)
- Location field : Always a country name (if you made this field compulsory)
- Email address : Often @gawab.com, @yandex.ru, @ajiex.info, @agolubi.org, @web.de, @onlymail2007.com or any other weird email address

Another trick : Type the name on google and if the name appears in a lots of boards, they may be bots, they register in any forum they find.

What you can do

- Ban these members
- You can delete them, but they may register again
- You can use the word censor to forbid usernames, but there's room for only 250 characters at all.
- Set up the account activation to "Administrator" and verify with Google as I said above, and if it's a bot, don't activate it.

To detect them more easily, you can make the birthday compulsory for the inscription.

i have seen googlebot on other forums and im prettysure hes fake otherwise he spends a lot of time advertising. he talks just like other bots saying things like "ooh this is the best thing next to popcorn" and stuff. I dont think he advertises google. Maybe i should put an idea for the wavy code lines after the big vote??

I think you can already use the wavy-code lines.

But i may be wrong...

The google bots are different from the spambots.

googlebots are there to crop the keywords for indexing your site and choose the ads (the google ads) according to the keywords.

The spambots come only to post adverts in topics and to try to crop email addresses posted in topics (that's why we recommend people to modify their email address's syntax to make them unreadable by bots.

This is the whole reason I want banning by e-mail address. As Katt has said they are OFTEN using those e-mail addresses (one of which I specifically mentioned as being a problem on my forum).

Clicking 'ban' does nothing - you still get hundreds signing up under the same e-mail @gawab.com etc. for which we all know are spammers!

That was just 2 and a bit pages from past couple of weeks. It gets a little bit annoying at times as i'm sure others may begin to realise just from these examples. More so when they do create actual e-mail accounts so they can verify themselves as most don't and do post We've set it to admin verify but doesn't stop them trying!

I have a small beginner forum related to editboard and i have had to delete 3 bots already :S

this forum should really ban the birthdate of march 28 1983. If you click members and scroll down. Click a few of the members. All those members who's borthdate is march 28 1983 are bots. I see about 12 new bots on this forum everyday. Which makes me wonder....how many real people are on this forum? Oh yeah and i cant wait till march 28th lol. there's gonna be sooooooo many birthdays.

The amount of spambots we've been getting over the past couple of weeks is absolutely ridiculous.

There needs to be something done about this - and fast.

I know that we're not allowed to make suggestions until the big vote is over, but this is getting beyond a joke.

Is there no way the technicians can set something up so we can block e-mail addresses? They're all using the same ones. Or at registration have the letters and numbers in wavy lines thing.

I don't want to moan and whine, because I think the editboard service is great, but seriously, something needs to be done.

And I know the way around it is to have admin activation - but that might inhibit and impede genuine users.

Don't worry, the big vote's end is satursday and in the french support forum, we harass the technicians to solve this problem, so I hope they'll try
