If I understand you correctly, you purchased a domain name outside of forumotion and you wish to have it re direct to your forumotion forum. Is this correct?

If so, try giving this tutorial a read and following its steps: https://help.forumotion.com/t7021-redirect-an-extern-domain-name-that-you-own-to-your-board . This should help you accomplish this .

If you followed the tutorial, you should now have be able to get your custom domain name to re direct to your forum.

That message simply means you will not able to get your FREE (default) forumotion domain name to re direct to your custom domain name. You can still have your domain name re direct TO your forum though.
