Karma! Empty Karma!

Post by LawDVHS13 July 11th 2008, 7:25 pm

I heard many members from my website that we should have karma.
Members can plus 1 karma if the person posted a topic that help them alot.
Other website, have same function has karma in their forums.
Since they have it, why shouldn't we?

Now, members with the most karma, we can see who helps
our forum the most, so we can give them credits.

For example:
Some dude, comes out to me, can I become moderator? And I look at his posts, 1,531?
How will I know if those posts are spam or even helpful at all?

But, if we have Karma:
Some dude comes out to me, can I become moderator? And I look at his posts, 1,531, with
Karma: 1271, members thanking him. That means that a lot of members appreciate his help
since he got a lot of karma. So I know that I can trust him, etc.

You get my point? =D

Besides pointing out that there is already a topic and poll about reputation/karma, I'd like to comment on this chunk of quoted text here.

1) A lot of communities tend to frown on members asking to be moderators. For a lot of places, asking to be promoted to moderator is a good way to make sure you're never going to be moderator. Just saying.

2) I wouldn't say that having a good karma or reputation score means someone is trustworthy. For example, on a board I've been with for the better part of a decade, have been in good standing with for all that time, have in the past been a moderator for as well as staff member for their site, and was even the first member voted "Member of the Month", my reputation score is quite a bit lower than many other members on there. Reputation points can be and often are a matter of buddies +repping back and forth or simply a popularity contest, with complete disregard for personal character or trustworthiness.

3) When looking to promote someone to moderator or even administrator status, it's probably a good idea to actually know who you're promoting rather than simply basing it on their reputation score. I'd rather promote someone based on my experience with that person than based on an arbitrary number.
