What is the difference between this html page and a forum? And for people who don't have a forum and want to create a site (a free version), how to do that? :)

This post should sum that all up:

Buster wrote:Hello all!

Today I am going to show you how you can make a site! (You know a true site, like www.google.com )

      Question: What is a website?
Answer: A website is a web page that is build on an HTML foundation and is able to display a wide variety on content to visitors such as text, graphics, images, multimedia, sounds, animation and so much more.

      Question: What is HTML?
Answer: Hyper Text Mark-Up Language (HTML), a subset of Standard Generalized Mark-Up Language (SGML) for electronic publishing, the specific standard used for the World Wide Web.

Question: How much does it cost to make a site?
Answer: Most site can be made 100% FREE

Question: What do I need to make a site?
Answer: Notepad (Or some other text processor), a host, and the knowledge of HTML, and some times CSS.

Where can I learn HTML you ask? I learnt HTML, along with a few other web development codes, at "Writing HTML": http://www.mcli.dist.maricopa.edu/tut/lessons.html

However a I went on in web development I learnt from w3school: http://www.w3schools.com/html/default.asp

And then later learnt XHTML, and CSS:

Now that you know how to do all this, where should you host? Well I have a list:

Free web hosts:
http://www.webonce.com 50MB of Space
http://www.50megs.com 50MB of Space
http://www.freewebs.com About 50MB of Space
http://www.tripod.com 20MB of Space
http://www.angelfire.com 20MB of Space
http://www.geocities.com 15MB of Space
http://www.bravenet.com 50MB of Space
http://www.0catch.com 100MB of Space
https://free.prohosting.com 100MB of Space
http://www.275mb.com 275MB of Space
http://www.freewebspace.com 100MB of Space
http://www.Awardspace.com 200MB of Space - Submitted by Internal_Combustion

INFO:

http://www.50megs.com
- No HTML
- Banner Ads
- Poor Service

I truelly dont think this site should be used, but if you are just starting out with the cyber world, you should try it.

http://www.freewebs.com
- HTML / Easy Builder
- Banner Ads (Only on Easy Builder, not on HTML)
- Great Service
- Community Interaction

This is a great site if you are new to the cyber world or if your a vet. This site is widely used, I truelly think you should try it!

http://www.geocities.com
- Some HTML
- Great Easy Builder
- Ok Service
- Community Interaction
- Low Hosting Space

This site is great for new people as well, it allows you to update your site very easily, and can be made in minutes. The one bad thing is the low hosting space, and you must be a Yahoo member to make a site.

http://www.bravenet.com
- No HTML
- Poor Easy Builder (All sites look the same)
- Ok Service
- Banner Ads

This site is great for messages, but for it to be a clan site... I dont think it would work out to well... It offers a ton of space, but the thing is, you would never get a shot to fill that space.

I hope you enjoyed this! afro

I would recommend using freewebs as a beginner, they have quite a few templates which are easy to edit. Also, if you have some competence in html you can create a better looking site.

I've done many sites on freewebs using html, and they look just as good as a professional site. I then go to a free domain registration site so that I don't have to use www.freewebs.com/yoursitename

If you want some help setting up a freewebs site I'd be happy to help, just PM me.

Post by Sally February 16th 2007, 5:19 pm

Thanks for your help xaphania. :)

Is there anybody who know how to create a site using PHP. Apparently it's complicated but almost all the fan sites (about artists) are created with php by normal people not necessary profesionnals.

So is there a simple way I'll create one as well. Something easy like signing up and then starting adding text or pictures etc without to have to read all these articles about the technique side of it etc

Any help is much needed and appreciated. :)

The PHP tutorial will be probably translated soon but I you understand french, you have the tutorial in french : http://www.siteduzero.com/tuto-3-4-0-un-site-dynamique-avec-php.html

May I also suggest Webmonkey in addition to the site earlier suggested? Webmonkey supplies a cheatsheet for HTML codes that you can quick reference to.

HTML is the base for a website. Then you can add a "dynamic touch" with PHP Wink

This websistes (SDZ and NP) gives the bases, then you can find more explanations on the web (and ask for an answer in the forums) Wink

Basic html coding can be done in notepad, then dependant on your website host either copied and pasted or uploaded.

If you're using a host like freewebs, you can code in notepad, and copy and paste it.

For somewhere like awardspace, you'll need to download a FTP Program (File Transfer Protocol), such as Filezilla (google it).

If you have Microsoft FrontPage you can use this to create web pages in a "WYSIWYG" environment, however sometimes it's easier just to code.

Premade layouts are really useful, a great place for this is http://www.oswd.org/ , they have loads of templates which you download, and can then modify using basic html and upload to your web server.

to create a site with HTML and PHP, you have to download a software (i.e Notepad++) and you have to find an host which allows HTML and PHP Smile

No, it's not necessary if you're competent in html and are using a host such as freewebs. But if you're a beginner, and want a premade layout from the site I gave earlier then yes you'll have to download it - but the file sizes aren't huge if that's what you're worried about.

Basically, there's no easy way to create a good looking site, it will take time and some time to learn html. If you want to use freewebs, they have some basic layouts, but they don't look very professional.

Finally, you could pay for the services of a professional coder to create a site for you.

Edit: You shouldn't have to download Notepad...your computer will come with that.

By the way, why is it easy to create a forum and not a site? Sad

Notepad is a program that comes preinstalled on your computer. If you go to Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Notepad, it will open up.

No idea why it's so easy to create a forum as opposed to a website, but it can be easy if you don't try and go too advanced too soon.

As a beginner I think you're trying to be too ambitious...I really would recommend starting out with freewebs and seeing where you go from there. The free templates at oswd are sort of middle-level knowledge and then things like PHP and MySQL are very advanced.

Freewebs is where I started out and my first site was very basic - now, a year later, I've learned the basics of html and am able to create a pretty good looking site.

Don't expect to do it in a day - it takes time and patience and willingness to read around the subject.

Thank you for that, I didn't know.

For freewebs, when I searched "create a site" on the net I got that option and I created it, it's quite easy but once it was done :

1st : I got the www.freewebs.com/mysitename

2nd : There is no equivalent of the Administration Panel in a forum or maybe there is and I don't see it. So I don't know how to full it, I see only the page like if I was a member not an admin!!!

And for the php version being difficult, I don't know how all these fans created all these sites then? Confused They're mostly students, teenagers and they created these sites. :/
