my suggustion is
for our forum can beable to
put password on topic meaning like a
pirvate sub forum or topic
like for all my mod and admin need there privatesy
and to make the room for admin and mod only so
when a normal member enter it will say
you havent got premission to enter this forum

stuff like at

sub port me and vote yes if you like it

and plus if a member want a private forum
it come up with a password area for them to enter

the owner of the sub private forum can give out the password to a friend or anyone them trust

if you mean to be able to protect a subforum or category with a password, well I wote yes, I arrived here because I need this function: I need a forum where only selected people can be admitted to discuss strategic issues...

its an advantage, also to protect MMORPG players from scammers, posers etc.

well in any other case... the password would be the responsibility of the forum admin if he/she trusts the person seeking access to the topic/forum

i know that there is a permissions feature already.

but i think it makes things less complicated

i agree with Master Marc!!there are the permissions in the admin panel so you dont have to put a password evey time you want to post!maybe the password will be found...voted no

Yes, this would allow for some contests. Like, look around the forum for some clues to the password.

I say no. First of all no need for password.... Just make the forum visible to certain ranks therefore their rank is a password.
Secondly if people create their own forums with their own passwords, they ould be breaking rules and posting indecent images in there, and no one would know!

You can make restricted forums with groups and passwords to forums may get passed around by members.

I just made a similar thread, we desperatly need it. You already can set it to a mod/admin only section but not password guard it. What Im thinking of is something like what they do at proboards, you have an "Add Password" option in the admin section, you then set the password and the only people who will be able to access it is those who you've told the password to.

See, yes, you can already set it so certain ranks can access it but we need it so you may be more selective. I run a league on an MMO and forumotion is our new forum site, we arent quite the most beloved league in the game because of our power and size, so understandably people want to know our secrets and war plans and to infiltrate us, this something we cannot allow.
We set up Operations, and when we do we keep things secret to prevent leaks. Only those who are involved were allowed into the Military subforums at our proboards forum, and to allow them we gave them the password and instructed them to inform no one of it, many of them Ive known for a long time and can trust. The password didnt get passed around the members.
Then after the completion of the Operation the password would be reset and known only to me, it would be released once another Operation was in progress and the forum was needed.

So for people with situations like mine this Password feature is VERY important.

would be cool, but we don't really need a password on a section or forum, you can add permissions to the users or groups who you allow to access a forum or not, you can even give permission to show the forum to a special group or to hide it, so I see it is useless
