I'm still trying to make a forum (that's good) and if so I'd definitely use the the portal, just makes it look cool and appealing.

no im not interested in portals at all ..i don't need them..maybe just for now

I use a portal on my forum.

I think it's an easy way to make a sort of summary of your forum. So new visitors can easely find what they need.

In my case, I made a forum for a nightclub in Belgium and I putted an agenda on my portal, each weekend there is another theme @ the club and the links on my portal connects my visitors directly to the right topic.

Not all visitors know a lot about internet or forums so it's easy for them.

Absolutely, it gives a good first impression and looks more like a 'homepage' than the index page.

A portal can be a good thing or a negative feature if used badly
And when I make mine, it never satisfies me, so I don't use one

and actually new users who r not familiar with boards might not find their way to get inside the forrum itself..they may thing that the website is just what they see..the portal
