what is the purpose of ip banning?

hi ya..can any one plz telll that wat is the right purpose and function of ip banning .. wat wud happen when ill ban any ip address? can any body tell me its right function and purpose wid full details.. THANKS... waiting for ur answer

If you IP Ban someone,then they will not have access to your forum.

I've never been IP Banned or banned from a forum before,but I've heard about other people being IP Banned before.

I think they will not even be able to view your forum.

It's used when someone is trying to create multiple accounts trying to spam up your forum.That's why we use it to stop the people from destroying our forums.

hmmm i hv used it once when some one was spaming my forum .. i banned his ip.... here on forumotion a guy was saying that by ip banning .then banned ip user can veiw the forum by that ip but not able to register at forum...im confused on it that when ill ban the ip address does he dnt allowed to veiw my forum or not allowed to register at my forum..which one is correct?plz help
