User list

I am getting emails with confirmation of new users, although they are not always showing up on the users ACP, user tab.... why is this ??

You checking the inactive list?

excellent thanks... I have it so members activate their account themselves, why does it do that?

Check whom you allow to activate new accounts..
Admin CP > Users & Groups > User options > 'New accounts activation'

I checked that and I have ticked for the 'User' to activate themselves.... most of them do, but I do get a few that I need to activate... why?

Don't activate them cause they doesn't want anything in your forum if you activate it, If they can activate it using email then they'll do but if they are not interested to be your member then they don't activate it
