Creating a skin

How do I create a skin?

It takes:

1. a main pot made out of a gfx program
2. a gallon of experience and time
3. 3 cups of patience and timing
4. a pinch of creativity
5. now stir gently and cook and Viola, you have a skin!

I could use some basic directions.
