New posts icon not showing
Hi,
One of my members has reported today that after awhile, all posts show up as read so they can no longer tell which forums have new posts in and which don't (I think they have the same problem for topics with new posts in). Here is exactly what they said:
I don't seem to have this problem myself I don't think, although I am finding out if any of my other members experience the same problem. What should I tell them to do?
Thanks in advance

For some reason, the whole Forum comes up after a while as being "read" which means I don't know which posts are new and which are not.

maybe your member has been a few minutes too long inactive on the forum after login...
cause then all threads appear to be read...
as you get logged out automatically

I noticed that sometimes if you view the forum homepage for a while and then refresh it, they all appear as read.
As for what to tell them, they will have to look at the date/time of the post to see weather it is a new post or not.

its not only the forum home page...
but the whole forum as one...
if youre inactive for too long... thats what happens

Yes. This is exactly the problem.
Surely it is not supposed to do that though. No matter how long someone is inactive for, the posts should still show as unread until read. It looks as though this is a technical issue then?

Hopefully this can be moved into the need of a technician section?

You don't need a technician.
Just tell your members not to keep the site open for long periods of time.

Re: New posts icon not showing
You could suggest that. But you might want to find out the current time so you can actually prove that its too little.

I don't understand why I should have to tell my members this when it is a basic feature? Even on phpBB software as it was developed and intended, it is not the case that if you "leave it too long" they will show as read. They have not been read so that is the software tricking you.
It makes absoloutely no sense at all and I for one think this is more important than cool new features or modifications, because it is a basic necessity. I know as a member myself I would be annoyed if a forum did that! Often members only check new posts since last visit.
I would feel better if a moderator or someone of authority could comment and I hope they see where i'm coming from. I fail to see that a "i don't need a technician".

well...
when you logout and login again...
they appear as read.. or better said as "no new post" too... dont they??
here its the same...
if youre away for too long...
youre getting auto-logged out...
just like the session time out in the chatbox...
if you have the "remember me" check box activated when login..... you dont even notice this logout...
if you dont have this activated... you will notice it.. as you got logged out and need to login again
so it does make sense that topics appear as no new posts anymore... when you come back.. and log in again

No...my forum does not auto log me out at all. I stay logged in at all times because I have ticked the "remember me" option at login page. It would annoy the living daylights out of me if I was auto logged out from a forum, forcing me to login each visit!

you dont even notice this happen
cause youre getting auto-logged in again after getting active again...
cause you have "rememebr me" activated...

Re: New posts icon not showing
If you members didn't stay on the same page for 10 minutes, maybe this wouldn't happen.

So what if my members choose to stay on the same page for 10 minutes? I don't see how sarcasm is going to be of any benefit to anyone.
It is their computer, and their prerogative if they want to do this. I do it all the time. Many browsers used tabbed browsing now, and this means pages are left "open" without being used for long periods at a time. It doesn't mean they should have to put up with a difficult to use forum, in my opinion. I think that is common sense!
I have made a suggestion HERE.

Re: New posts icon not showing
I don't get this problem with my normal phpBB downloaded and installed that I run on my own hosting.
Can I ask why forumotion implemented a session timeout? What are the benefits? Thus far I can only see negatives for my members
