Navbar shows how many new pms you have

How do you make the navbar show how many new pms you have, like on this forum, it says you have ## new pms

You have to use the text, not images.

Well here's the thing, you won't be able to have navbar images.

If you really want to do it that way go to Administration Panel, Display, Homepage, Headers & Navigation, Display only images in the navbar, and check No.

Ok then so if i do that, it will say how many new pms there are when i get one then??
