Having the old URL redirect to a new URL that we just purchased (also how long will it take)

Hey everyone, I just purchased a new URL for my forum, and I was wondering how I could have the old URL redirect to the new one? Or does it do this automatically?
Also how long will it take before the URL is activated, we are renaming all our topics on the forum atm.
