chatbox on index or portal?

I have not created a forum yet. I had a question before making my final decision.

I know from the past that your chatbox was located on the bottom of the index page (at least in the forum I had went to), where phpbb2 was being used.

Now with the new phpbb3 is the chatbox still located on the index page or will it have to be located on the portal? From what I understand they have not created a mod for the phpbb3 to put a chatbox on the index page yet.

The reason why I am asking is that I know the portal is an open page, but I want my forum to be a private forum to be viewed by registered members only. And I would like my chatbox to also be only accessed by registered members only.

On the phpbb 3 version, you can select to activate your chatbox either on the top of your index page or on the bottom of your index page. Don't worry, the chatbox will be placed on your index page unless you arrange it to be placed on the portal. As for only enabling your members to view the chatbox, you can manage your index so that only registered members can view the page. Here's a chatbox tutorial that might be useful for you.
