are these allowed? Can I use the pictures on the site to make derivative works? I'm guessing no, since that's not the intent of the site

YES you are allowed to post YOUR personal work. Please don't forget the international copyright laws that extend to on-registered work.
If it isn't your work, seek permission first - if denied, remove it/dont post it, if approved/permitted, post it
