Is Xbox Live really required in order to save?

Hi all

Just bought an XBox 360 4GB with Kinect primarily for my son who saw the Disney Adventure game running in the shop display. Anyhow, when I first turn the Xbox on, and run the game it says saving is disabled unless I connect to Xbox Live. So I log out, go to system / network settings, test the connection and connect to Xbox Live, sign in and start over.

2 questions - do I really need to go through all that everytime he wants to play? And I know I have 1 month.... sub......ion to Xbox Live, when that runs out I assume I need to start subscribing if I want to enable game saving. If so, what’s the 4GB for and why doesn't Kinect adventures require this?

Any help gratefully received.
