Help with {USERNAME} problem Empty Help with {USERNAME} problem

Post by ~Chris December 4th 2008, 6:54 am

Hello, some of you will be familiar with the ' { USERNAME } ' code, that whenever you write it, it comes up as the person who's looking at its username.

Well, I'm afraid I'm having a small problem with it. I put the code in the Welcome Message, so that it showed the persons username, but whenever people read the welcome message, it just comes up as 'Hello Guest' Instead of their username.

Is there anybody that can help me with this?

As far as I know, and if I'm not mistaken,
you cannot use {USERNAME} in welcome message, nor for email purpose.

If that's the case, then why does it come up 'guest'? If you could not use the code then wouldn't it come up as just { USERNAME }?

It will show us all our names Gunhack, but really he means he used [USERNAME]

The code used anywhere on here, will show our names

Observe: Guest, Guest, Guest <-- Should see your name three times. when really all it says is { USERNAME } (Adding gaps makes a broken link)

I am stuck on how this problem is happening though.

-- Make sure you have NO gaps, either side of the word Username and Userlink, otherwise the code won't work.

Do you know how can I use this to show only a message to guest in the welcome message?

Add the word [Username] to the guest message box, so that they too see their name.

Obviously you need to change [] <-- these ..... for {} <-- these.

Post by Gunhack X December 4th 2008, 6:38 pm

Yeah, but Like I wan to have this kind of message:

Welcome, Guest to our forum! If you want to use our service you will need to register... etc.

and then after a member log in I want a message that show:

Welcome, Guest There are new updates in our forum please take a look at... blah, blah.

Do you understand what I mean?

Or just remove the guest message after the member log in. (I am not talking about a widget). <- I don't like it. I am talking the welcome message in generalities.

hi there,
its easy to show certain message only for quest in forum, you just need to create new portal/ widget and paste welcoming message there. After that, dont forget to set those block permission to quest only.

Another way is using your forum homepage or better using a personalize floating bar via javascript.

edit : about second message for members, you need to create another block & set permission just for members only Smile

So what it is doing is actually reading the word "Guest" as a user GROUP name..

Think about it, it's for a guest message right? So in that case, anyone who gets the message, WILL be a guest, and have NO name until they are set into a group.. I.E "Members"

If you set a group called [Username] then you may be able to do what you want.

Yeah, but what is the point of this? If you don't tell me how can I use this code... and I said I don't like widget, so I don't use them. Please, If you know how can I use and make this code to show the message to guest, it would be great!

Or another idea, not so much using a code.

Make a thread which only "Guests" will see, and make it all they CAN see until they register? set it so members cant see it.

Then set it so that only guests can see it, (at the top, make sure it isn't set that Admin/Mods can see it)... Make a special group for yourself.. not Recognised as Admin, but allow Admin permissions.

Dammit, where is Placehold, he knows about this stuff..

sure, but your will have an floating message, dont know if you gonna like it or not.
First you must create an floating bar. Refer to this link to get javasciprt for this, just follow all instruction there to setup you own floating bar.

Refer : [HERE]

there is 3 part of this script that you must care, CSS, Javascript & your message content. Put CSS on your CSS stylesheet, Javascript on homepage mesage & message content on widget block (dont forget to deactivate table type for this block, this will make your widget goes invisible)

make 2 widget block & set permission to guest & member for each widget, no worry because this widget will stay hidden as long as you deactivate table type for it.

by completing this step you will have an 2 different floating bar message,

Gunhack X wrote:I can't! omg when I try to uncheck the member box permission the guest, get unchecked, too.
re-check your quest box permission back. then hit save

Yeah, the CAPS gets me all the time too.. I dunno, but I find it hard to actually write in Caps, once you get used to writing in lower.

Still, it's useful to know.

Did that work now Gunhack?
