Foreign languages Empty Foreign languages

Post by Cornelia August 30th 2006, 7:06 am

Hello.

Seeing people speaking different languages, it motivated me to open this topic to discuss about languages.

How many languages and which ones do you speak. Yes I know, most people here speak English at different levels, but many people speak at least two languages

More, which language (s) would you like to learn or improve?

Personally, I'm not English. My mother tongue is French, but I have English family, my grandmother was British and one of my uncle got married with an English woman.

I began to learn English at age 9. In Québec, because we're surrounded by English territories, it's compulsory to begin English courses at this age. Then, playing RPG videogames helped me much improving my English and I always got nice results in English at school.

I knew that Editboard, which was only available in French one year ago, was about to get translated in foreign languages, putting English in priority, so when I discovered this board, there was still no mod, so I got a great opportunity to practice my English by moderating and helping people.

At age 17, I began collegial studies in Language Arts. In this program, I got extra English courses while I had the two compulsory ones. In the same program, I had Spanigh courses in four semesters. I would like to continue to improve my Spanish, but I still have no opportunity for it...

Finally, in the future, I would like to learn Japanese which fascinates me. I like the Japanese culture and I would like to have a trip in Japan

And you?

Well, I can speak in four languages!, I can speak fulent Engish, a few phrases of French, a bit of Spanish and a few phrases and words of German.

I would like to learn French some more and also German, since I'm starting high school I have an opportunity to learn Spanish, German and French.

Hopefully, I would someday like to learn Greek or Dutch. Very Happy

I'm English, so english speaking. I live in France, so french speaking.

I can understand someone in dutch or german (most of the times) but have difficulties in answering in german (forget about dutch).
I also have a (minuscle) italian word bank which enables me to go shopping in Italy time to time.

I' like to imporve on my German, otherwise, I'm happy with my languages, I don't feel the need for more

I speak and write Portuguese, English and a bit of French and Spanish.
I know a few words (only a couple) of Chinese (Mandarim) and Japanese.
I'm learnig Esperanto, the universal language Very Happy

I realy love to learn new languages not only for the words but because each one expresses a bit of each country's cultures (in the way phrases are constructed)...

For example, the portuguese word "Saudade" is unique and no other language in the world has a word with the same meaning (in english this word means "I feel distant from..."). This word was firstly used in the XIII century and it's related with the nostalgy of the portuguese discovery period.

One other exemple is the similarities of some portuguese and japanese words... Portugal an Japan allways had a close relationship until the Japan's Revolution (when all the other country's people were expelled from Japan). One of the many exemples is the word soap... in portuguese it's spelled "Sabão" an in japanese is spelled "Shabon".

... But I guess I'm already talking too much Wink just to say I like to learn new languages ...

Cumps everyone!

hI,,
Although I`m an Arabic girl but i`m interesting in learning English.. and I want to improve my English by making friendships and chatting (via internet) with native English speakers.

The worst thing is .. there is no much English people in my city to talk with Sad so I really believe in practicing and keep talking which help anyone to refresh his knowledge.

so I speak Arabic and English

You're Arabic Question

What country do you live in? (I'm Algerian ^^)

I speak only 3 languages : French, English and Arabic, but I understand a little Germanic too (not enough to have a conversation I guess xD)

I do speak French :p cause I am...

I speak English, at least, I do the best I can. I learnt English because my ex girl friend was Scottisch and she didn't know anything in french except the song "Voulez vous coucher avec moi ce soir"...

Anyway I read all the harry Potter books in English (really better than French, more powerful, more dark... let's read it, it's another book !) to improve my level in English.

And... I'm here Smile

Let's rock, I hope to feel good moment and learn many things.

PS : I speak a very very little bit German : Ich bin ein Berliner... Not very efficient in a chat, isn't it ?

No, it's only because she left England for Canada.

We managed to be a little bit together when she was in London, but Canada is definitly too far.

English... obviously, I've been learning French for about 8 years now but put me together with a French person and I'd just stand there saying 'what?' Laughing Unfortunately here in Scotland, other than School/University and TV5 on Sky, there is no other way to hear people speaking French. I've bought LOADS of French films and CDs to help me though (my favourites are Patricia Kaas, Mylene Farmer, Natasha St Pier, Johnny Hallyday, Isabelle Boulay, Lara Fabian...)

I also learned German for 3 years (again useless at it), and Spanish for 2 whole weeks!

Moi aussi je suis québécoise!!! J'habite Québec, alors je parle français depuis toujours, et je parle très bien anglais aussi (habiter au Québec oblige...). Je baragouine l'espagnol et j'ai de vagues connaissances en inuktitut (la langue des inuits) et en japonais.

For foreigners: (Don't forget that for me, english is a foreign language... lol)
I'm from Québec too! I live in Québec City, so my first language is french, and I can speak very well in english too (living in Québec province made me to...). I can make myself understandable in spanish ("baragouiner" is a very hard word to translate... can talk, but everybody knows it's not my first language... not even my second language... lol) and I have vague knowings of inuktitut (inuit's language) and japanese.
