Solved Cautious about purchasing a domain name

Post by mklawson on February 7th 2011, 5:41 am

Hi, I'm new here. I posted an intro but I'm sorry that my first real post is asking for something instead of providing help. As it may be I do need help.

I am an admin for a local airsoft free forum by forumotion. The administration has recently decided to ask our members if we should buy the domain name. In the thread we have had a few questions raised that I personally would like to know the answers too, plus one more for now.

"Will this affect our internet history? as of now when I go to google and type our forum's keywords i find the thousands of posts made on this website cause our forum to come up first in the search results.

If we changed our website would their be the possibility of losing any of our old posts/topics?

If we changed would there be the possibility of people navigating to our "dead" .forumotion site?" Mr. Anonymous

I would also like to know if our current members will need to create a new account?

Thank you for the help and for taking your time to help me. I have been the/an admin for roughly two years and I'm not a guru by any means. We have mostly been getting buy on the run. My main concern is the the possibility of losing members due to a "move". We have had to move three times before and its been a train wreck coming back from each one. Our community relies on these forums to communicate and organize. I don't want to have any setbacks while trying to improve it and especially while paying for it, literally.

Thank you,
Matt

Do believe the simple answer to all your questions would be no.

There will be absolutely no difference to your forum apart from the fact that you no longer would have forumotion in your URL. This will make it easier for people to remember your forum's new URL. All traffic from your previous URL, ie the one with forumotion, is automatically sent, without problem, to your new URL. You will not lose posts/topics, etc. There would definitely be no need for your members to create new accounts.

When I purchased my domain through Forumotion the experience was painless & simple. It took only two or three days to come through.
