Solved Domain Hijacked!

Post by DuctTapedGoat October 1st 2011, 3:30 am

My domain name was apparantly purchased by some squatter when mine expired. Now not only does my link redirect to a godaddy url sales site, I can't even change my domain name despite just purchasing the credits to renew it.

I'm sitting on 500 business cards with that url - wtf forumotion?

The first link is the url/domain name that was hijacked. The second is the direct link to my site.

So you did not renew your domain name when it expired?

Solved Re: Domain Hijacked!

Post by DuctTapedGoat October 1st 2011, 7:05 am

In admin tools it still lists that domain as my domain name and gives me no option to change it. I never had a chance to renew the domain name! Someone put a backlog order on the domain name, and the very second mine was up for renewal, it was acquired by them.

What upsets me the most of this whole situation is that Forumotion did not give me a chance to renew my domain name before someone hijacked the domain name from underneath me when it expired, leaving it open for anyone to take inbetween renewals - which can be backordered, so that the second my domain is empty, they put in to purchase it.

What I want, is either a refund for the 1600 credit purchase, or the ability to change my domain name.

You get 60 before it expires to renew which you failed to do. Forumotion will not give you your money back for your miskate. Forumotion uses Godaddy for their domain host which is why you see that page. There might be time to get it back by messaging a staff member with your email you used to buy domain along with your addrress and it will be forward to Godfather. Also include domain name/sub domain.

Well it expired September 9th - far from 60 days. The very same day it expired it was up for sale. I just got paid today to renew it. I'm not the original founder of the site, so I can't contact anyone with the email used to purchase it, and that person is uncontactable.

It's not MY mistake - this is Forumotion's problem, it shouldn't take this much runaround to get things renewed.

No it's not Forumotion fault they give you a 60 day warning to prevent this. If you don't notice the warning that's your own fault. End of story.

No - not end of story. I've got a legitimate situation that I need help with here that should only realistically take a 5 minute conversation over a telephone, but instead I have to deal with it via a help desk forum.

You're at the wrong forum then.
If you want telephone support, you need paid hosting, NOT free hosting.

ForuMotion are for kids to start new forums.
What were you thinking starting a business on a free forum host? lmao.

Anyway, I checked the nameservers of the domain and it's now out of ForuMotion's control ( I think, unless they created those nameservers )

Your domain is gone. Face it! Unless you buy it from the person who purchased the expired domain for 10x the original price.

DuctTapedGoat wrote:My domain name was apparantly purchased by some squatter when mine expired.
Oh! And I bet they aren't any "squatter" either.

However, if you donated cash to your own forum for credits and there was some sort of error when attempting to re-new the domain ( for the credits to be subtracted while you did not obtain a domain name ) , you should be able to get back your cash ( well, credits Via your admin panel ) by writing a simple private message to a member of staff.

If you have not done this, then there's nothing anyone can do. And you said you weren't the founder? what? Why are you trying to renew a domain you're not ( or were not ) the founder of? If you send cash Via donate link, then the domain isn't going to be renewed like magic. The founder needs to use their admin panel.

---

On a side note, if you can't afford domains for your forumotion forum and really need the cash, inbox me your email. Although, you'll be required to work for the cash as I'm not just giving it away free, Very good

Solved Re: Domain Hijacked!

Post by DuctTapedGoat October 2nd 2011, 5:22 am

I'm definitely aware of that Marc - I was just saying what would take 5 mins via phone is going to take a lot longer via help desk forum.

I know what you're saying though - if it was reg'd by someone already, then I won't get that domain name.

What's going on is this - I received no warning as to when it would expire. I am the current founder, but not the original founder, which causes LOTS of problems when doing certain things. The previous founder registered the domain name, I received the site from him last year.

Where I'm sitting now is here.

I have 1600 credits which I would LIKE to spend on a domain name. I am the current founder of the site. What gets me is, I don't see any option to renew the domain name, the domain name is still listed in the admin panel as my current domain name (the one that is expired), and there is no option to even CHANGE the domain name.

That's what I need help with, and I see it as a pretty big effing concern. I pay Forumotion for a service, but the service isn't there. If I wanted to just throw away money, I'd give it to drunks under the local bridge before I gave it to random people online.

The reason I brought up the refund thing is this. If I can't even have a real domain name for my site - wtf else am I going to spend 1600 credits on? I can at least maintain the illusion that it's a semiprofessional forum by mainly having a domain name and also paying for storage space and removing ads, but there's no sense in doing ANY of that with a free domain that ends with ...bikesforum.the-talk.net. Y'know what I mean?

Are you using the founder account? If you are not, then you will not be able to do what you want. Can you see the credit management in the administration panel?

@sig - Yup - this is all using the current founder account in the credits management section. Like I said - there's no option to renew or even change the domain, and the domain which expired is still listed in that section as being my current domain name.

@Rideem3 - I had to reread, but yes, I understand that now. I didn't receive any notification 60 days prior to it expiring though. I'm fine with making a new domain name, and I can always go through my business cards and black out the old domain and write in the new domain. But - how would I change the domain name when it is telling me that the expired one is still current in the credits management section?

This is exactly what it says.

You have currently 1600 credits.

Currently, your forum address is : http://www.motorizedbikeforum.com
www.motorizedbikeforum.com
For 1600 credits you can have a personalized domain name for one year. You can at anytime delete it and retrieve your default domain name.
Your original domain name is http://motorizedbikesforum.the-talk.net.

Its out of your hands since its passed the expire date. You will need to get a new domain name. There isn't much you can do due to being almost an month ago since it expired.

Have you even read what my problem is? Whole lotta help you are.

According to my admin panel, it's NOT expired, it's current. As well, there is NO OPTION TO CHANGE IT.

Hello,

In admin tools it still lists that domain as my domain name and gives me no option to change it. I never had a chance to renew the domain name! Someone put a backlog order on the domain name, and the very second mine was up for renewal, it was acquired by them.

What upsets me the most of this whole situation is that Forumotion did not give me a chance to renew my domain name before someone hijacked the domain name from underneath me when it expired, leaving it open for anyone to take inbetween renewals - which can be backordered, so that the second my domain is empty, they put in to purchase it.

the domaine name www.motorizedbikeforum.com is not a forumotion domain name and never have been purchased from forumotion! it's an external domain name that you put using CNAME in the forum http://motorizedbikesforum.the-talk.net that's way you can't purchase a new domain name and also that's way you can not renew it from your admin panel

you asked paypal for a refound of your 1600 credits, ok for that it's done. but this does not change your problem because the domain is out of our service and I invite you to treat this with your current registrar if you are the legal owner. but if not, you can't do anything because the domain name is not yours Wink

solution: to delate the CNAME you did in your forum, go to your admin panel >> general >> forum adress >> Personalized domain name >> delete

and then you'll be free to purshace a new domain name from your admin panel >> misc >> spend credits >> domain name
