In progress How to Copy Forum

Post by Sam_G May 1st 2013, 7:31 pm

I'm the administrator of http://aquarists-at-usf.forumotion.com, and I am trying to figure out how to make a copy of the entire forum. I would like to make an exact duplicate of the forum (just with a different URL) and keep both forums (the old and new duplicate) running simultaneously.

Thank you in advance for your help!

What exactly do you mean by copy?

You would have to make a deep backup copy through an external programming language (namely, Phyton) and import all the data onto your new forum which is a) a pest to code b) not supported directly by forumotion (but not prohibited, either, as far as I know) c) not especially useful because you already have such forum.

You could only ever make use of it if you were to convert to another forum host.

Go to Display > Skins > Themes management > Export your theme section.
It should be like this:
- Current skin: Whole style

If you see something like that, click now the Export button. (You'll download a file which is the theme itself)

Now go to the forum you want to put the exact theme and you'll see under the export section the import section, choose the file that you download previously (the import) then click the Import button. Then you're done.

All you need to do is to copy the templates (if you have) and put it on the forum that you put the theme.

Thanks for the help everyone. What I mean by a copy is an exact duplicate of the forum. I want to make a double of the entire current forum (including: portal, forum threads, everything). I don't have very good tech skills, so I'm afraid Ultron's Vision's suggestion may be a reach for me. I tried what you suggested E-Mark, but that only copied the skin, not the actual data (e.g., threads, etc.) from the forum.

Any other suggestions?

Hello,

That's not possible.

You could only ever make use of it if you were to convert to another forum host.
Also, this isn't possible as Forumotion don't give access to their database.

It IS possible, I have witnessed it myself with this forum which was a forumotion forum but then changed to another forum host.
I even talked to the forum's admin about how he did so - his answer was that he used Phyton to do just what I said.
