Show Forums/Category in Portal

The Help Forum's portal has a section with a category and the forums within it, and I want to incorporate one like this into my portal. The preinstalled forum widget only displays a list of links on bullet points, totally not as cool as this. So I was wondering, is there a hidden feature? A certain HTML code that I can implement as a custom widget? Any help would be awesome.
