Kinda hard to be informed when the techs aren't giving out info, don't ya think? Just as negative as the first time around, Saurus.Saurus wrote:Saurus, you seem to have some negativity about others expressing their displeasure with a service..
No - I have problems with uninformed people making idle and ridiculous threats that serve no purpose.
And if that's not what you're referring to about being informed, then perhaps you're in the wrong thread to be pissing and moaning. Take it somewhere else.

The techs were not even working over the weekend. How would they give information out:)

Seems to me that YOU are the one "pissing and moaning", sonny - not me:) And until you have a MOD tag after your name - you don't tell anyone where to take anything, got it? Have a nice day:)

Saurus, it is ok, Please don't feed into the attitude frenzy here. It's perfectly understandable that members become frustrated and aggitated when such problems unknowingly arise from time to time here. Server issues and glitches of this nature are not uncommon as most are aware and under the circumstances, we as Staff and the Techies will do everything possible to see that these issues are addressed and resolved in a timely manner.
Again , I apologize for the inconvience this may have caused members over this weekend, and I will continue to look into this matter in hopes this will all be resolved shortly. But I ask please be patient, as this issue my require some time for the server to settle and go back to normal again.

I don't see as how you have anything to apologize for. You're a volunteer Moderator - not a tech and certainly not an IT hardware specialist. This entire thing has been blown way out of proportion to what it was - a hiccup in the system - and it can happen anywhere at any time. People need to educate themselves on systems technology. NO system is perfect - paid or free. To think otherwise is absurd. Nobody lost anything from their forums - everything is intact and backed up anyway.
I shudder to think of what some of these peoples lives are going to be like if a minor bump in the road like this sends them into a paroxism of hysteria. It's ludicrous.

Thank you Nessa. The server was still having problems last night (gmt-7); most of our forum members were in the chatbox at the time for about 7 hours and it and the forum kept going down for short periods intermittently. We kind of figured it was server hiccups.
It really does help to be kept informed, so we have a rough idea of what to expect, especially when planning live events like last night's.
Saurus, that is not hysteria. No one has ever accused me of that before; it's ludicrous.

Re: ( Only Topic ) Recent Server Issue / Problem
Saurus, I do understand what your trying to explain, but I must disagree a bit. This last server crash was the largest one I have seen, so I understand their panic. Even Youtube has crashed a few times, but their host server is most likely much more powerful than Forumotions, seeing their size. Though, Forumotion and the overall works of Computer Science are ever-changing, adapting to issues as they come. It takes time, so we must be patient. However, I would not recommend adding to any stress that may have built up here. Arguements do not not help, if not make worse, stressful situations and atmosphere's. As humans, we naturally want to know what went wrong, so that we may fix it. The problem has now seemed to have been fixed, so now we may all get back back to our forums. Hopefully a crash like that will not come upon us again.

Are you perhaps a bit paranoid? I don't recall directing my remarks to anyone in particular. That you think it was directed at you is rather interesting.

Let's analyze your remarks, okay?
1- This was not what I - in my long experience (over 20 years) on the Internet - would call a "major crash". It lasted what, about 7 hours total - on a weekend? Another free host I deal with was out 4 full days recently. That could be considered a major incident, but it was beyond the control of the forum hosts. Crashes happen. Always have, always will. Knowing the reason for the crash will not help anyone who maintains a forum - it is beyond their control or means to repair.
2- Adding to stress? How - by clearly stating the obvious? People have to learn to deal with adversity without going off half-cocked and making threats to move their forums elsewhere and stamping their feet. It's juvenile and counter-productive. Then again it appears to me by their use of grammar that the majority of people here are in fact juveniles, so there ya go.
3- Arguments? Who, me? I'm not arguing with anyone. Like others, I am stating my opinion of the recent events. People can take it as they like. Contradicting remarks that are simply nonsense is something people will have to deal with. Life is sometimes ... well - you know.
4- Of course we hope that there will never be another crash. I hope the next meteor doesn't collide with Earth, too. But realistically - both will happen some day. The former is much more likely to happen sooner, rather than later. If that is so critical to the lives of some forum admins, it might be better to find a new hobby. That's life, kids. Deal with it. If they need coddling and soothing - they should go to Mommy - they won't get it from me.
I'll repeat what I said previously ... if some people are so unhappy with Forumotion as a host, all they need to do is buy a hosting service, get a domain name, and install phpBB or whatever software they want on their host. Some will do it for you for free. That's all they need to do. Then they have nobody to blame if their forum blows up but themselves. But these days we can't have that, can we? We need to blame someone/something else for our problems. The whining about Forumotion techs and admins not spending their time soothing jangled nerves is nonsense. Knowing what the problem was, in the end, will not help a single admin. If people would spend a few minutes reading the FAQ's and especially the topic on forum security by Typlo - they would see that all forums are backed up every day by Raid arrays, and the Databases are always secure. The chances that any forums would be lost due to a crash are practically non-existent - or at least as small as technology allows.
If people want to disagree with me - try to make a cogent argument rather than hysterical rants ... be my guest. I'm done.

Re: ( Only Topic ) Recent Server Issue / Problem
I am having these problems now, again. I for one will not appologize for my impatience, as I didn't make a fuss during the last downtime, but here it is again. This is free to use, but I have paid for some things to optimize my site here and don't see this as acceptable. I can be patient, but I can't be tolerant of these types of situations. I rely on my site as a source of income, as well as run a heavily used community.
Perhaps they should have technicians around all the time for those that pay for services. At the very least they can actually monitor the situation and let us know what the problem is and what they're doing about it.
But hey, they already have my money, what can I do about it?

Trying to avoid being "snarky" here, but would you mind telling me "approximately" how much you have invested in your forumotion site?
The reason I ask is simple ...
I just bought another hosting package that included a "free forever" domain name unlimited databases, 200gb transfer/mo, 20gb storage, and all the goodies. Cost? Under $4.00/mo. I already own 2 hosting packages and 3 domains but this was too good to pass up. AND, it includes 1 click installation of the full phpBB2 forum software, and other applications as well.
With just a hint" of "snarkiness", how much is your business worth to you that you'd use a free hosting service when you can get everything including free eCommerce packages for under $4 bucks?
I'm sorry, but I don't get it. So "what you can do about it" is ... spend your money on a self hosted forum and not have to worry about it. I can't for the life of me see using a "free" host (that you pay extras on) if it's a source of income for you.
Re: ( Only Topic ) Recent Server Issue / Problem
Allow me to be "snarky" in return.
When I created the site it wasn't a source of income. Due to it's success it has become a source of income. Not much I can do about those circumstances. I can, and will, move to a service as you described, but I will still be out the money I have spent here. So when I say what can I do, I referr to what can I do about my losses thus far. I paid for a year, and I have only used 1 month, not to mention the time and effort I have put into this site. Pretty self explanitory there.
Also, the amount of money I have invested in this service is irrelevant. A burger is only $2.00, but if you tell them not to put mayo on it and they do, do you not want it fixed? Of course you do.
My question is, who are you to dictate how I feel about not being satisfied with a service I pay for?
The way I see it, if you are not a member of the staff, and you have no information relating to this problem, you have no grounds to reply in such a fashion to anybody that has a problem with the service they are using. If you would like to continue to defend the integrity of this service feel free to do so with PMs, I would be happy to express myself more freely.

Just to let you know, I used "snarkiness" as a substitute for a whole bunch of words that would have gotten me banned from here. Feel free to gleefully substitute your own choice language.... I totally agree with you.

Re: ( Only Topic ) Recent Server Issue / Problem
I am sorry to bother you with this problem and if I'm in wrong forum area to be posting this I'm sorry too. But here is the problem the forum which me and my friends created together for our guild and other players in the game mabiogi is down and say (could not access list of unread posts from forums) do you know if it is a server issue or are we getting dusted for some odd reason? Or could it be that me and my friends did something that caused this? And can it be fixed?
Thank you for any help you can give us. Here is the link:
