Security issues associated with a guestbook?
I'm thinking of making a forum on my forumotion site to give guests a brief description of what the site is about and a place for them to post comments and ask questions. I've seen it done on a few other sites I've visited recently and it seems to work well.
Is anyone aware of potential security risks associated with this?
Also, will the IP be logged when someone posts in case of abuse?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Security issues associated with a guestbook?
So all you do is have a board/forum as a overview of what your forums about and what ever else you like to add. Have the boards permissions set for guest as you see fit?
everything else will be in the forums permissions(each board) on what you want to allow guest to do on the designate board or boards/forums.
(guest can have permissions on every board if you wanted them to?)
as far as security risk? there only guest. to be come a full member you will have to join the forum.
if a guest dose post then there ip will show?
so lil confused on what exactly what you mean. but i'm hoping that's what you needed to know?
if not? just reply here and be a lil more specific on what it is your trying to accomplish.
hope that helps a lil.
thanx.

I know how to set permissions for my forums.
What I'm wondering is if anyone has experienced any security issues like hacking because a guest can post and will the guest's IP be logged.

If guest post something? then you as a admin or any mods you allow to see ip's will show in the post for you and any staff you allow to see. It's only for staff to see.
and yes it will still be logged in the sense of them posting.
but no one. and i repeat no one can see the guest ip's unless they are a admin or you allow your mods permissions to see them.. and that goes for all members too. not just guest.
only staff can see members or guest ip's.

Thanks, but I know only staff can see IP addresses.
Okay...one question answered. Thanks very much.
Does anyone know of any security issues resulting from allowing guests to post on a phpBB website?

Just gives them freedom to spam without having the pain of registering.
