Unread messages marked read

I've been having a problem (as have my members) with unread messages getting marked read. I can go to the forum, read a few posts, go away for a while (without logging out) then go back and refresh the page and all the posts are marked read when I know they're not all read. Any suggestions as to what the issue may be?

It happens with all of us, if you close the browser. It considers you have read all the messages.
