Forumotion to log User IPs at the time of their registration and include this info in the email that's sent to site Administrators
Forumotion to Include IP on registration email
At the moment, when users register an account, the only way to see their IP address is (a) if they have already posted on the forum or (b) in the ACP, but you may not always be online at the same time as them so this method is not very effective.
What we need is the user IP address to be logged by forumotion at the time of their registration and this info to included in the email that's already sent to site administrators.
It's not that difficult to implement!
EDIT: Can I just make this clear... what we are asking for is not for the
individual member to submit their IP during registration, but for
Forumotion to GIVE us this information.

Re: Forumotion to Include IP on registration email
You could make a field for it and only make it view able to mod/admin's. But I would love to see a feature like this.

Half of the people that joins a forumotion forum doesn't know what an IP address is..MrMario wrote:You could make a field for it and only make it view able to mod/admin's.

Re: Forumotion to Include IP on registration email
Thanks guys.
Having the IP provided on registration also helps if we have members that have registered on our forums but have never posted. These could be duplicate accounts for all we know.
Having their IP address provided automatically at the start will allow us to check and will improve forum security I reckon.

Re: Forumotion to Include IP on registration email
lol. It would stop the spammers? You can simply use a proxy to have a different IP to spam again...Spuddie978 wrote:I Voted Yes It Will Also Stop Spammers
What we need is a feature to filter proxies from the non-proxy users...

Voted yes.
I find myself wanting this more and more, plus like SophieDophs said, I don't believe this particular feature would be too difficult to implement.

Re: Forumotion to Include IP on registration email
I'm not sure I see the point?
If someone is using an IP that hasn't been banned by you it's not going to be recognised by you as a problem IP. The banned IP's aren't able to register again after they've been banned or what would be the point of banning them to begin with?
I think the problem you're trying to address is banned members returning under different ID's. As another poster said, a proxy/non proxy filter is really the only way to solve that issue.
I'd also look into the actual legalities of it. What you're basically proposing is unauthorised access to electronic data. Unless you make it very clear on your registration that the user, by submitting an application to register, agrees to part with this information.
The TOS state An IP address of each poster is recorded in order to help us to make you respect these conditions.
That disclaimer doesn't cover access to IP information BEFORE a member is even allowed to join.
A simple way to control newbies is to shove them all into a heavily restricted group on registration. Allow them access to only the welcome category and wait for them to post. Assuming they are genuine you can then set the rankings so that they automatically subscribe to a higher rank with full access to the forums after a certain number of posts.
You can edit settings in Admin to auto delete inactive users from the newbie group after a set period of time so this will weed out the sock accounts and the trolls.
I don't think the issue of duplicate accounts from the same IP is a problem either, is it? Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty certain the option to restrict one account to one IP already exists in the Admin panel?

This is a great idea , and I really need this option in my forum Voted Yes

Re: Forumotion to Include IP on registration email
Personally, I object.
Not that it is a bad idea, but as IPs are no longer fixed or static, it is useless.

I suggested this already... I'm surprised how much support this thread got and mine was hardly active even when I made a chart example and all..

Re: Forumotion to Include IP on registration email
Does a plumber fix a kitchen sink leak with tools needed to fix a cooker? A tool should be designed to deal with a specific problem. Overloading Admin panel with unnecessary tools is only going to confuse people even more. As founders we should be looking for ways to streamline our job rather than make it more complex.
I really want to understand how this tool will help me stay on top of banned IP's. Please can anyone explain?
Lets say I am banned from this site. Tomorrow I visit the internet cafe down the road that has 50 different computers each with their own unique IP address. How will this tool stop me from creating an account every day?
Or even easier, lets say I have hotspot shield installed running on my PC which hides my address. What will Admin do then with this tool to keep me out?

Re: Forumotion to Include IP on registration email
Oliverio,
this doesn't help keep track of banned IP's at all.
It simply allows you to know the IP address of a user before they post & if you cannot catch them online.
It doesn't matter if the address is from a proxy, but the suggestion is merely to know what the IP address of a user is.

Re: Forumotion to Include IP on registration email
Thanks for answering the question
Fair enough.
If other people want the option who am I to stand in their way? Really don't see any point to it though...
I usually just have a clear out once a month to delete any registrations that haven't bothered posting. Not really interested in what their IP is...lol

Thanks for all your comments, guys.
oliverio - I appreciate your comments too but like Darren says, it's just a simple extra piece of info included in the email already sent to forum administrators.
Please keep on voting everyone! Cheers.
