In progress Banning a member - Dynamic IP?

Post by Rubber Ducky November 27th 2012, 7:36 pm

Hi there, I hope we can resolve this issue quite frequently.
Recently, a recently registered user named 'Leroy' on my forum has been trolling the hell out of my forum, posting useless posts everywhere and many other issues have arrived. I won't go into details, but my forum is based on a server that is being run on a game called Garry's Mod (GMOD), and he has also had his steam ID perma-banned from there.
However, the issue comes when this 'Leroy' user has frequently different IP's, i have banned a total of 3 IP's in great succession to try and deal with this, however he keeps returning, creating new accounts and carrying on with his idiocy. Every time I look at the ban-control, a new IP is added to his 'list' of IP's and I have to re-ban it. I have spoken to some people and they believe it is something to do with a 'Dynamic IP'. Some users are becoming distressed on my forum, and I need to act fast.

Please, is there anything that I can do to stop this?

You can have it where new members have to be activated by an administrator.

Unfortunately not much you can do. There are enough programmes out there for trolls to keep changing their IP address and re-registering every 5 minutes.

All you can do is ban him each time you spot him.

Making new accounts require approval by an adminstrator only helps if he's registering under the same username each time. If he doesn't then how do you know if you're stopping a genuine new user or the troll?

Ban his email as well and as slg said, you can have yourself have to confirm their registration first via Admin Smile

See i dont ban people any more.
I put then in a group with no permissions to do anything on the forum.
then i have a welcome board where all new members have to post first before having access to the rest of the forums.

By doing this, i can see someones ip when they post to say hi and introduce there self and see all other ip used by the user and other user names with he same ip's. Like if you have user using the same ip as another one, it will show other users using this ip.
So if it is someone that's in the group already that has no permissions, then i know not to let them have access and put them right in the group again.

and if they keep coming back with different ip, i just keep putting in the same group.

Dag house method thumleft

sounds mean, but if you ban and they keep coming back , You have to do something and found this has worked good for me in the past and even now. So that's what i do , but not everyone likes to go this route?

It's a good idea but the problem is that most trolls use different IPs or proxys that hide their IP each time they register.
