Stopping Users Logins From Timing Out
Hi all,
I have searched for quite a while and couldn't seem to find an answer to this.
The forum I am managing has the "Auto login" thing switched on, so that users don't have to log in each visit. That's cool.
Members also get e-mails on topics they are tracking. Great!
Then comes the problem I am having. After some time (Guessing 20 days or so), the user no longer is getting e-mails regarding the topics they are tracking and they also need to log in again. I think these two are related somehow. However, there is no indication of this whatsoever, so the member just thinks the forum is inactive (no e-mail of notifications of topics) and they don't need to go visit. It's killing my forum as members just believe the forum is dead.
How can I stop that from happening? I have searched for ages looking for some option in the admins panel that might counteract this effect, but to no avail.
Any clues?
Cheers,
BQ.

Re: Stopping Users Logins From Timing Out
Well a member can not stay logged on for 20 days, unless he/she is refreshing the page, posting, reading topics, etc. (being active).

Of course, but the issue is that members are not getting their notification e-mails after the guessed time period.

Do they have it set up in their profiles to receive email notifications?

Yes. Otherwise it wouldn't stop after 20 days or however long it is... it wouldn't even start.

Re: Stopping Users Logins From Timing Out
What duration do you have set in the administration panel for the time before the forum considers a member inactive which will unlog them?
For the email notifications, are the topics being replied to that is being watched? Ask your members to check this:
Profile > Topic(s) Being Watched

Do you mean this:
?
I believe the topics are being posted in, but that is a good question, I haven't actually 100% verified that before asking. I know the user doesn't get any e-mail from the site and then the user returns to the site to find a bunch of topics they haven't read... but I didn't actually quantify that those topics are in fact ones that the user(s) were tracking. That might be the bit I am missing.
Forgive me, I am a bit of a newbie when it comes to adminning forumotion forums ;-)
Is there a way to automatically remind users to come back if they haven't logged in for, say, 14 days? I saw the manual one... I guess it would need a mod or something to do that?

Re: Stopping Users Logins From Timing Out
There is not a automatic way to remind members to visit your forum.
You could use this:
Administration Panel > Users & Usergroups > Users > Handle Users

Yes, I found that one... I'll just have to remember to do it every week or so ;-)
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Stopping Users Logins From Timing Out
Your members will not receive the same email notification twice.
Lets say you have member and a forum called forum1 and a new topic is posted in that forum.
The member will get a notification about the new topic (if he/she is subscribed to that forum)
If another topic is then posted in that forum and the member hasn't visited the forum since the last email, another email won't be send because one has already been sent to notify that user that topics have been posted since their last log in.
Does that make sense?

Re: Stopping Users Logins From Timing Out
Nope. I am waiting to see if it still happens, but since nothing has changed, I can't imagine how anything would improve. Once it happens again, I am going to verify that the topic is indeed tracked and posted in and I will update this topic.
