Solved Possible Hack???

Post by don.falken January 30th 2016, 12:33 am

I am founder of knightgregson.forumotion.com

We have not had a lot of activity on this forum recently, but it was reported to me on 1/27/16 that at least one member was receiving alert messages when signing into the forum.

link to displayed alert image

The alert could not be closed without clicking OK
When I signed on I also got an alert to update my flash plugin. Similarly, I could not get rid of this until I disconnected from the internet, quit safari and safe started the browser. Incidentally both reports are using the Safari browser.

Another report indicated that an alert came up upon opening the home page to the forum, that membership was required. The forum is set to be open and viewed by all, but posting is limited to members. Again, this alert could not be closed.

I have spent the last couple of days exploring the postings, and I do not see what may be causing the problem. I have not had a problem entering the site or accessing any of the forums/topics myself since I first tried on 1/27.

I have scanned all my dropbox files linked to the site for malware and have found none.

I am not sure what to do next????

Thanks for any help

Hello,

Are you or the user viewing the forum from a mobile? I know there have been issues with ads sometimes doing this as well as causing an auto re direction, it did this months on mobile, luckily the issue has since been resolved and hasnt happened in awhile. Similarly there was a issue similar to this on all devices some time last year which was also resolved.

I can assure you your forum was not hacked and that fm's servers are safe and malaware/virus free.

Now I have a couple questions for you.

Does this happen on all browsers and/or devices? If not what browsers have it been reported it on? How long has the problem been occuring? Did you make any changes or install any codes on the forum before this issue started happening? Do all your users get this issue? What is the url to your forum?

Does this happen on all browsers and/or devices? Don't know yet. Report is using Safari I don't know if iOS or OS X.

How long has the problem been occuring? First report was 1/27/16.

Did you make any changes or install any codes on the forum before this issue started happening? No. After getting the report I have changed a few things-- repair of broken links, deleted an inactive script in the Modules section, checked the coding of the home page for my forum. I did not see anything strange here, but I am not familiar with what it should look like. I did scan the homepage code using W3C XHTML validator and found it reported several errors.

Do all your users get this issue? I have not heard from others. The forum has been rather inactive for the better part of a year.

What is the url to your forum?http://knightgregson.forumotion.com

Yes, one user. She is using an iPad. I have suggested she (1) reboot her iPad and (2) update THE iOS--she is using an old version. I am waiting to get a response. I have had no problems accessing the site using my iPad, iPhone or iMac. This may be an individual problem. This user is in Europe, so it is unlikely that I will hear back until tomorrow. Sorry if I jumped to post this problem too early. I really appreciate your help in this matter.

Yes it sounds like an issue on that users end. Also try telling them to clear their browsers cache and cookies and or try a different browser. She should also try viewing thd forum from a different device to see if the issue still occurs.
