Smilies as text....(solved)

I've checked the FAQ & searched for a answer... but I haven't been able to solve my problem yet...
The smilies in my forum are showing up as text rather than an image. I have selected "YES" to "enable smilies".
Have I done something wrong?
And they aren't always as text.. just sometimes. What causes that??
