Is it possible to let a normal member use his own personal avatar?

Yes. Members can upload their avatars in their profiles.

Profile > Avatar
Upload an Avatar from your computer :
Upload an Avatar from a URL :
Link to an off-site Avatar :

Seems like I was using a skin which didn't support Avatars.

I just replaced my skin slg.

Seems like I was using a skin which didn't support Avatars, this one works.
