Solved Searching post content

Post by Kestrana 10/6/2012, 15:40

Is there a way to get search (either basic or advanced) to search post content as well as topic titles?

For example, I can search my site for the word "hatching" and it returns three results. If I search for "Seeth" (a character name which only appears within posts, not in a topic title), I get no results.

I also noticed that if I search for the word "hatch" I don't get any of the results that "hatching" returns. Expected search behavior is that it would return the same results; there's nothing indicating that it has to be an exact match.

Is there a setting in the Administration panel that I'm missing? I haven't tweaked anything with regards to search (not intentionally, anyway).

EDIT: It also appears that you can't search for anything containing apostrophes. Example: "K'then" returns no results, even though it is a topic title in the "Character Applications" board. Link: http://reverie.forumotion.net/f8-character-application

The search option only searches by keywords in topic titles.

Response to slg: That didn't used to be the case. A couple of years ago when I set up my first site on FM, search would search post content. Has something changed?

Not being able to search post content is extremely inconvenient for users of my forum; we can't put the entire post in the topic title! Besides which, when you open the search results, it highlights the appearance of the word throughout the entire topic - THAT'S not limited to the title, so search is obviously capable of searching post content.

I think you can still do that. Just search a word and it has to work.

As far as i know nothing has changed.
Forumotions search should be the same exact search function as are on regular phpbb forums. They work the same.

Well, if you do the "Search Google" option on the Advanced Search page, you'll get Google's results, which include searching within post content.

Less than ideal, but I guess it'll have to do.

Dunno what default phpBB behavior is, but I know the site that uses phpBB forums at my workplace has options to search content, titles, or both (and defaults to both).
