Solved The [roll] bbcode - how does it work?

Post by Kestrana July 18th 2012, 2:13 am

Couldn't find anything in the search about this and it's not covered in "The RPG feature" FAQ thread. There's an option when you enable dice rolling to "Activate [roll] bbcode for the dice roll:" with a warning, "(Beware : with the BBcode, the dices will be rolled again if you edit the message)".

I activated the bbcode and tried various permutations:
Code:
[roll]
[roll][/roll]
[roll d6]
[roll d6 x4]
[roll 4d6]
[roll]d6[/roll]
[roll]d6 x4[/roll]
[roll]4d6[/roll]

These all just printed out exactly what I typed in - there was no functionality included. I do have bbcode enabled on the site, in my profile, and in the thread.

Does this feature only work when you don't set up custom dice (e.g., I have d4, d6, d10, d12, and d20)? Is there some special format that you have to type it in to get it to work? Does it require than an image be uploaded for each type of dice? In short, how do you get the [roll] bbcode to work?

Do you see the dice option when you edit or create a new post. It should be under the editor?

Yes you should see a button as SLG says you click that and it will roll the dice for you and show in the posts you make

If you edit the post, the dice are rolled again.

All: The button isn't under the editor (that's the thing that does the double-posting, which I hate), it's in amidst the rest of the wysiwyg buttons above the textarea. Perhaps this should be added to the Dice Roll section of the FAQ page so others can easily find it in the future.

And the format (for those who prefer to type it rather than use the wysiwyg - I hate wysiwygs, too) is:
Code:
[roll="name of die"][/roll]
e.g.
[roll="d4"][/roll]

That is one upside to the double-posting function is that you can have it roll multiples of the same die in one line (e.g.: roll four d4 dice, get d4: 1, 4, 2, 2) rather than having to roll each die individually (e.g., [roll="d4"][/roll], [roll="d4"][/roll], [roll="d4"][/roll], [roll="d4"][/roll]); however, I would much rather roll each one individually than have it double-post all the time. Correction: to roll multiples of the same die in one roll, you use:
Code:
[roll="name of die"]# of times you want to roll[/roll]
e.g.
[roll="d4"]4[/roll]
Output:
Kestrana carried out 4 launched of one d4: 1 , 2 , 1 , 1
