I know how he can fix it, just go to display>>Headers & Navigation>>
On that page click the green up arrow to move the Portal link to the end of the list.
Even when you don't have an image there is makes a small space, but when you move the /button/space to the beginning of the list order it will not be noticeable because it won't be beside another button that the space can be seen.

Yes, it does work its logical, I have 2 nav links that I don't use in the navigation bar, and I hide the space in that same fashion. I've seen this question asked hundreds of times and people giving out css codes to fix it, but all you have to do is what I explained above. It of course works for custom navbars as well if you're using the default nav selectors, just change the order of the nav links in AP and its fixed.
