How to create a forum url redirect

Hey, so I have a question.

Because my formation website is active enough, formation is offering me the ability to host my own forum url, or like, change it from forumotion.net to whatever I want.

But I was told that when I do it auto redirects from the old one to the new one when I enter the old url, but someone else told me that I need to make a redirect.

So I just wanna know, if I have to do a redirect manually, how do I go about making that happen?

I'm not very good with scripting and stuff, so like, is there a step by step guide?

Any help you can give would be great, thanks!
