He probably means he bought a domain since he said he paid. 

But,  in case you meant you just changed the link that takes effect instantly @omegaviper.

Pertaining to a new domain name, In terms of the CNAME & ARecord and even 301 forwarding, nowadays the DNS servers propagate quite quickly.

It may depend on the domain registrar, but the change should definitely take effect within 24 hours and no later.
