Solved The New Icon

Post by Zandranna March 11th 2017, 4:01 am

I have noticed that the "new post" only shows up for a day or two. It then disappears even if it hasn't been read.

I would like "new post" to show for longer that just such a short while (7 days) for those members that may only come on the board every few days.

I've searched the settings to see where it can be changed but I can't find it so can you tell me where to look if it can be changed?

Thank you.

It only shows as new when you first log in. If you do not read all the new posts and log off, they will not appear new to you when you log back on again. This is how the system is set up. You can not change it.

Oh bottoms! That's a shame because one doesn't always have time to read all of the posts in one go.

Although that doesn't seem to be how it works as I have not been logging off.

Or do you mean it only shows when you first visit and it disappears when you shut the window down?

Thank you so much for your quick answer.

If you are not logging off the forum and closing your browser (clearing your history), the new posts will not stay that way when you open your browser and visit your forum.

If you just mean a tab (window) in your browser, it will still show the new posts.

Solved Re: The New Icon

Post by Zandranna March 12th 2017, 11:45 am

That is not what happens.

1) I didn't log off

2) I haven't cleared my history or cache.

The "New" icon shows up for a couple of days. It seems to be on a time limit and doesn't seem to have anything to do with logging off or clearing caches.

On the system I was on previously, in the management settings we could choose how many days we could show the "new" icon before it deleted if people hadn't already read the post.

It seems that we can't do that here on FM. So thank you for your time, I am grateful, but I haven't really got as answer as I see.

Solved Re: The New Icon

Post by Zandranna March 12th 2017, 2:01 pm

Unlike many people I do not not have my browser set to clear my history when I close down. I always clear history and cache manually as and when I feel it needs it.

So when I close my window down, I am not logging off of FM. I do not have to sign back in each time I visit.

When I come back on say a few hours later the "new" icon is still there.

My problem isn't with the icon disappearing, my problem is that to me it seems that there is a time limit set on the icon to show.

Even if one clears out their cache on going back to a board the icon should not have disappeared or how on earth would members who have their cache and history to clear each time they close their computer down see the next day when logging on which posts are new.

I do thank you so much for your time spent reading and answering this, but by your answers I can see that there is no setting in the management setting to change the amount of time limit set on the "new" icon showing.

I will be testing this out by leaving my computer switched on and the window to the board open all night, maybe two and see if the "new" icon is still there the following day or two, because according to your theory the new icon should still be showing because I have't closed down.

What reply?

There is an option in the administration panel that will log you off after a certain period of time.  Have you set it?

Sorry, it must have been someone else's reply. I only saw it for a few seconds and then started writing. By the time I clicked to send my post the reply had gone.

Nope, I haven't set that. I don't get logged off.

Also I tested this afternoon. At 1pm my time I made a post in another name which obviously showed up for me as a new reply in my active username name. 2 hours later I refreshed the page and the "New" icon was gone on both the front page and on the topic.

There surely must be something in the settings I have set up wrong. But I have gone over and over those settings and can't find anything.

There is not a setting for new or old posts in the administration panel.  It could be something with your browser's cache.  It could be having an issue with the forum cookies.  Have you cleared your cache recently.

Exactly try resyning your forum:  AP > General > Forum > Configuration (at the bottom of the page).

I did what you suggested and resynched my board.

I really thought it was working - but the "New" icon this time only stayed showing for 9 hours.

I must have a word with my members and see how it is working for them. None of them so far have said that the posts aren't showing as "new" for them when they come on the board. But I will investigate.

Solved Re: The New Icon

Post by Zandranna March 13th 2017, 11:00 pm

I did think along those lines this afternoon.

I was wondering. On Firefox, I have my Admin active username logged in. In Safari, I am logged in on my Game Master username. I do that so I don't have to log in and out when using each name.

I've been making the test post in the Game Master account via Sarfari and keeping watch on the "New" icon on Firefox with my Admin account.

I was wondering if it might have something to do with my IP. Meaning that the FM system assumes that I have read/seen or whatever the new icon because the new post was made on the same IP address, albeit via a different browswer, and therefore clears the new images.

I don't know enough about computers or such so am only making a wild guess here. Although that wouldn't explain why other people's new post icons are disappearing so quickly would it.

There was a new post in my general chat forum today from a member which I didn't enter into when I first saw it, but when I went back a few hours later that too had disappeared.

It really is a mystery.

Any other suggestions you might have?

Wait a minute!  Are you talking about a member seeing his own reply/topic as new?  If yes, it should never appear new to that member.  Yes, it will appear in the list of new topics since your last visit, but it will not have the new icon.

When you say disappeared, do you mean the whole topic or just the new icon?

Solved Re: The New Icon

Post by Zandranna March 14th 2017, 10:17 pm

No, I"m not talking about a member seeing his own reply/topic as new.

I honestly don't know how to explain it any better than in my previous post.

The following is how I tested how long the "New" icon showed for.

1) In safari I am logged into my board and I post in my Game Master username.

2) In Firefox I am logged into my board and I post in my active username which happens to be the Admin account.

After I make a post as Game Master in Safari I can see the "New" icon in Firefox as Admin. This is because it's two totally separate accounts and usernames.

Without opening the new post made by Game Master the new icon will only show for me as user Admin for a few hours.

Now, ignoring the testing for a moment..........

I go on the board and I see "New" icons showing where my members have made new posts. I don't always have time to click to go into those posts so I leave them showing as new. A few hours later the "New" icons no longer show on those posts.

@SLGray - That shouldn't really be related to it, but I will check that one out just in case.

@Zenzo - Yeah, that's a good idea. Luckily at the moment being a new board, it's not that busy that I can't keep track of new posts by just looking at the last poster name. If it's not me, then it's a new post, lol.

Thank you both for time and thoughts.

Solved Re: The New Icon

Post by Ape March 16th 2017, 1:28 am

okay i can help here i think.

I understand you are one member and the admin so you have 2 accounts on yor forum and you use 2 browsers to use 2 account's.

Now if you make a post and then go on your Admin account you will see the New posts / comments icon show in the non admin account.

now what you are saying is you then go in and start to read the posts and by the time you get to the one you made on your other account it says it's been read right ?

Well if this is the case i know why this is going on.

When you read a post it send's a file to our servers and to your browser to say it's been read or not read now when reading your threads / posts the system will send data to us saying you head read that topic. now if you click the back button on the browser it sends a cookie to your browser saying you have made a wrong move . now our system don't read that but your browser will so there for it will sow as all posts / threads are read even if you have not read them.

Now my advice is to try this.

When reading a post / thread always hit the Forum / home button in your navbar this will help you stop this problem as we will not send a cookie to your browser to say you back spaced the site.
