Solved How to make an inserted link open in a new windows / tab

Post by Chris43 August 18th 2017, 10:10 pm

My URL is http://mammillaria.forumotion.net/

What I want to do is to make a post containing a list of names, effectively an index, each entry of which is a link to another post in a different part of my forum.

I can to create a series of links, such as:

Name 1
Name 2
Name 3

etc.

I don't want my users to have to constantly be switching between windows. I want them to be able to click on a name, which opens a new window which has the requested post in it. Once they've read this, they can close it and they are back at the list of names in the original forum window.

I know that in, for example Edge or Internet Explorer, I could ask each user to remember to do a Ctl-click, but I'd like it to be automatic and under my control.

Can anyone help me to achieve this? What would be fantastic would be if I could somehow set a default of open in new window for any link in a subforum post.

Many thanks in advance

Use the insert a link button in the editor.

Solved Thanks but....

Post by Chris43 August 18th 2017, 10:33 pm

Yes, thanks for this, but I do know how to insert a link, so I can make a list of names which are links to the appropriate post. No problem there.

That inserts something like:

Identification problem

What I want this to do, as well as opening the link, is to do that in a NEW window, not the existing window.

There are no parameters on the Insert URL button dialogue that give me the option as to the destiny of the link. What I need is something like target="_blank somewhere in the [url=......] but wherever I put it either the text just shows or it isn't valid so the post doesn't work.

I don't mind editing each line in the list of names to add html code if necessary, but what that should be is my basic question.

You can try this:

Code:
<a href="http://mammillaria.forumotion.net/t2520-m-spec-mitla-oax-m-spec-lagunillas-qro" target="_blank">Identification problem</a>

But you have to paste this in html modus

Solved Great, thanks, but how do I?

Post by Chris43 August 18th 2017, 11:31 pm

Many thank,s that looks promising to me, but how do I get into html modus when I'm in post edit mode? Sorry to be thick, but I cant see any button that changes mode from normal edit text mode to html entry.

As you can tell, though I've been moderating this forum for ages, I haven't had to get too deep into things like this!

It is usually the last icon in the text editor, it looks like a sheet of paper!
When you click that one you can paste or write html codes directly into the textfield  Smile

You have to have HTML activated for the whole forum and in your profile.

Solved More help please

Post by Chris43 August 19th 2017, 12:45 pm

OK, with your kind help, I feel I'm getting there, but hopefully one last question -

Where do I set html to on for the forum and for my profile? I've scoured the menu options from the admin panel, but can't see any reference to html. I'm probably being thick, but please bear with me, and help me sort this one out.

For the board go to: ACP/General/Messages & Emails

Screenshot:

For your profile go to edit profile/preferences.. somewhere at the bottom you can tick yes for the box that says HTML Wink

Solved SOLVED

Post by Chris43 August 19th 2017, 7:09 pm

Many thanks people for all the help. The forum had enabled html, but my own profile hadn't. It does now, and it all works just like you said it would. I can't thank you all enough.

Best wishes,
Chris
