Horizontal Forum Alignment

What I'm essentially trying to accomplish here is that I'd like to take the vertical forum alignment, in that each forum within a category is stacked on top of one another, and instead align them horizontally, such as in this mockup. Any kind of resource or help in accomplishing this would be greatly appreciated.

I appreciate the fast response and I'll definitely give this a try, however; Is there no alternative that's more elegant than this? I've seen other forum hosting services with this sort of code that don't use this kind of method. It seems very Macgyver'd. I'm afraid that the staff for the site this is for might have trouble making new forums using this method.

You can accomplish something like that by modifing the templates ..and style it with css

The image I provided was actually from an excel document that I styled to use as a reference/mockup for the final design. I'll see what I can do with playing around with templates and CSS.
