Google Console: Couldn't fetch Sitemap

I want to add my forum's sitemap to Google Console. I tried inserting "sitemap.xml" in the blank space. I also tried inserting "/sitemap.xml" and "/sitemap.xml/" because this was a suggested fix in other topics here and elsewhere online. Each time I get an error message: "Couldn't fetch Sitemap". I just can't understand what the issue is and how to fix it.

your sitemap would be your url forum/sitemap.xml , but that after being well indexed

I'm sorry, what do you mean by "well indexed"? My forum has been added to Google Console months ago and a lot of the important pages have already been indexed. The topic you provided a link to concerns verification of property in Google Console and says nothing about sitemaps. I have verified the property a long time ago.
