Only Topic Trouble with Notification Emails

Post by *Gabriella* May 7th 2020, 4:49 pm

Hi, I'm the Admin of the Novel Lust Cafe https://novel-lust-cafe.forumotion.com/

For some time now some members are having problems with the notification emails.

When you edit your profile you can say yes or no to this:

The members having problems, haven't changed anything. The notification email just stopped all of a sudden.

How can the notification emails be enabled again?

Thanks for your help. Hello

Have they stopped because if an issue or because there are no new notifications?

SLGray wrote:Have they stopped because if an issue or because there are no new notifications?

They just suddenly stopped from one day to the other. There are posts in the watched topics, just no notification emails.

We're baffled. No one has an idea, what could be different or what could have changed... confused
The members without the notification emails subscribed to the topics and it worked fine until one day it all stopped.

It's also happening to me. My last 2 notification emails are from April 21st, and then suddenly one on May 1st...there were hundreds of posts in the meantime, but I didn't get a notification email.

I hope you can help us and have an idea... Help me

Further information...2 member with that problem are from the US, 1 member from the UK and 1 member from Germany (so far, still waiting for the others to reply)...so it can't be the internet provider. It was one of our first ideas.
We also checked the settings on the preferences page. Followed by checking the different spam folders (on the local email program and the online email website)...

So you have checked your profiles, and they are set correctly?

I confirm, this happens on the Dutch forums too, sometimes emails from newer posts come before mails from older posts, occasionally I had an email coming in from a post that was already a couple of days old and the other day I visited a forum I follow because I didn't get mails from it in 2 weeks and when logged in there, there were 33 notifications of new posts in de toolbar of which I didn't received any emails at all..

That was the first we did. All is set correctly. The notification emails just stopped.

That's exactly it. The members changed their profiles to at least get the toolbar notifications, because they don't get the notification emails anymore.

Today I had 28 notifications when I logged in to the forum, but I didn't get the emails for 26 of them. I did get the 2 emails for the PM notifications, though. Shrug confused

Do you usually get one email with all the notifications or one for each notification?

We get one notification email for each thread with a new post...

//

Here's an update from last night (13.05.2020)

1. Some members still have issues with this setting. They don't get any emails or when they get one (never all) they get it days later. confused

2. I have my email notifications back...I turned all off and back on. It worked for me, but not for the others... Confused

3. And to make it totally confusing...one member changed her email address and suddenly receives her email notifications again. All notifications for all her watched topics.

As I said from the start - we don't know what else to check and what it could be and our members are upset with this...

Well that sounds like an issue with the email provider, not Forumotion.  Have the members who have this issue make sure that Forumotion is not on any block list by their email providers.

Okay. I'll let them know. And come back, when I hear back from them. Thanks so far...I really appreciate your help... Hello Cheer

Besides that, the member with the most issues is using the Chromium browser on an Ubuntu system. I read somewhere that Chromium had/has issues with PHPBB. Do you think that could be the case with the missing push notifications? That member also said, they had some issues with the display of pictures/gifs... Think

I was going to ask if this issue occurs in all browsers and devices?  There iareissues with most browsers. Updating them usually solve some issues.

It is still occurring on my Dutch forums too, so I think it's a global bug blackeye it's not all the time, but when it occurs emailnotifications are not received at all or received in a random order..

The problem with the missing notification emails is still occurring at our forum. Some people still don't get any notifications by email and push notification are only sporadic.

I asked around for the browsers. So we have one Firefox, one Chromium, one Opera and the others all use Chrome. I would say it concerns all browsers. We really need some help to fix this problem. People are threatening to leave the forum, if this continues.

Only topic means that it seems to be a global issue @*Gabriella* so now anyone who's having problems with this can report it in this topic, they will still help you if they can, otherwise the headoffice technicians will fix the problem if at all possible.. Smile

Good evening. Hello

I just wanted to let you know, that the member with the most issues (meaning no email notifications and push notifications - except one older one every once in a while) has done the following:

- change of email address - one old email notification showed up
- uninstalled and re-installed the operating system - no success whatsoever
- installed the latest version of Chromium - no success

//

@TonnyKamper thanks for explaining things. I appreciate it. thumright I hope this problem can be fixed for all of us.

I honestly doubt this has anything to do with the connection type. I'm having a powerful wired one and I also receive delayed mails from this forum. :/

Yes, she uses Wi-Fi.
I also use Wi-Fi now and I had the same problem before. At that time, I had a cable connection. So, I had the same problem with both connections.

The member with the most issues changed her system to Linux Mint Cinnamon, latest version to see if it would help. It didn't.

We have a maintenance thread to inform out members of changes or issues and they can use it to tell us if something isn't working for them.
This issue affected our active members (can't say anything about the inactive members) but, it never affected all of us at once.
We have members from different countries and different time zones. It felt like a wave, that would go around the world...and hit all of us, just at a different time. Time in this regard means days or months.
The first person with this issues reported it in December 2019/ January 2020 and then we had another one every other month with the same issue and in a different location & time zone. Totally confusing... confused
The last 3 people reported the same issue within some days of each other ... Shocked
