In progress User ban

Post by Orbis Globvli January 19th 2012, 11:10 pm

A user of my forum: http://www.beadthrilled.com/ gets a ban notice while she has no (ip/email) ban nor has been put inactive.
I have given her a new userid and she can log in, but just not with her former userid. Could someone from outside be messing with my forum? Or the php codes?
It could now be only one user but I would be very unhappy seeing many more members ending up 'seeing' a ban.

Thank you for that!

Fortunately I can as admin still access my forum... it is just that one user reported a ban where I didn't apply it to this user.

Is that an unsecured log in?

I am sorry to sound a bit like a nag, but I can't risk to 'lose' control over my site... many people (well for my site that is) online at the moment.

Ha, your forums not that big, but you do take pride in it. Sorta looks okay.

Nothing on Forumotion is secure. If they use a proxy it will show the proxy IP; however, if Forumotion was on a Secure Server (https:) then it would display the real IP address and would drop the proxy, so that you;d know where the real bad person is coming from.

You can suggest it in the Suggestions For Your Forum thread.

Nope, related to many gaming forums mine is 'très petite' but in the niche where I operate becoming one of the bigger ones.

Anyway, it didn't work...

BTW, would in such a case access to the server help to shed some light on my problem?

Sorry, wasn't trying to bump Embarassed

Did the ban and unban... didn't help. A friend of mine looked into it as well, did some checks and confirmed the ban message is coming from my forum despite the user's profile telling me differently. So either somewhere the php code is giving the issue or somewhere in my forum's database there's a (personal/IP/email) ban that I can't see. But me being no wizz-miss I have no clue where to look further, if possible.

I had this same problem yesterday . https://help.forumotion.com/t103325-admin-cannot-login-says-banned#672916
I think that it was a combination of an email address that was deliberately not genuine and may have been generating bounces picked up by forumotion and a cache that needed clearing

Please see the comments by APE on that thread.

hello,
it means probablly that your Forum antispam systhem identified abnormal behavior on this account and disabled it! However, this does not ban the member but ask him to confirm his Identitie before entering the forum.

can you give me a screenshot of the exact error message received?

The message at the user's screen shot, similar to when I try to access the account using my own ISP:
User ban 41575310

However when I used an external web proxy to try to access the said account to verify accessibility I get this message:
User ban Scherm11

I am having the same issue with one of my users MOSC at http://watchlords.forumotion.net/forum. I also tried using a proxy to log in as the user and still received the banned user note.

I also reported a very similar case here. So, seemingly there are at least three forums that suffer from the same issue. First I thought this is a personal attack by a hacker, but now I start guessing the problem can rather be with the forum software.

Related to the above conclusion, I'd like to ask if in your cases the account that got blocked is a "prominent" one. In my case it is the oldest account (right after Admin) that has the highest post count (around 3100) on the forum. Knowing this might help solving the problem.

The reason that the user(s) are receiving that message, is because the email account used has an invalid character, thus the system thinks their a bot and bans them.
Sorry about that :/

Changing the Email solved it for me as well. That Email was never changed earlier, PM notifications came every day, and there was no invalid character. In any case, thanks a lot for helping!

I have tried to change the email of the person to no avail, it shows as an invalid email. So I set up another ID for them using another email account and it also came up invalid although both are working emails.

This is a long time member, only 400 posts compared to those including myself with thousands of posts. I did a forum restore losing a days worth of posts and still no ability for this person to log in, just a banned notice.

I need to get this resolved. By the way, what is with the yellow and plus one under my avatar?

Plus 1 is how many thank yous you have received from members. The yellow is a warning bar. It is a visual way to show you where you stand with the rules of the forum. When all the color is gone, it says Banned.

Clear the cache in FireFox/Internet Explore/Chrome
Get the member to do this and then on your site try and put your Email address in there account and then Resynchronize your forum once you have done that ask your member to login and then change the Email address and password back to some thing they know but not the one they used before.

Warnign bar? So where are the warnings I received then? As far as I know I have had zero issues in the support forum either with members or the rules. Or is this related to the forum I admin?
