A new Domain, same link?

I was wondering when you pay for a Domain name. Will it make a redirect link to that domain?

For example: http://domain_name.makeforum.net

And if you pay for the .makeforum to be gone then when someone type the domain name I mention above would they be directed to http://domain_name.net or would they be lead to a error page? I am wondering because I will be getting a domain name (As soon as 1 is decided because the name we wanted was already taken so a new one must be made.) and I wanted to know so if it is very important to inform the members or not.

I couldn't figure out where else to post this so I hope I made the right spot. But I been thinking it is time to get rid of the .makeforum from the Domain Link. I plan to get it on the 11/1/12 (First day of Thanksgiving) so I got plenty of time to wait. But I would like to know if I should make the announcement important or not.

The old address will still work, it will always work, and your new domain name will redirect to your forum also, but when your domain name (address) expires, it will no longer redirect to your forum. But your original address will always work. So if you plan on posting your link with the domain name at various places, keep in mind if it ever expires it won't work anymore.
