A Message Just For Visitors?
Hello!
I hope this hasn't been asked too many times already and that I'm not being redundant. I did some searching here but couldn't find the answer I needed. It's not always easy to figure out what keywords will net the search results you want, you know?
Anyway... what I want to be able to do is have a message show up at the top of my index page, but ONLY for visitors -- people who haven't registered yet. (If it shows up for registered members who just aren't logged in, that's okay, too.)
I created a custom widget containing the message, but couldn't find any settings controlling to whom it does or doesn't display itself. (I'm not sure if a custom widget is the answer; if I have to do this some other way... that's okay, too.)
This is an issue that I believe will help me garner some new users for my forum, so any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi, go to AP>>General>>Configuration
On that page scroll down where you see "Login popup" and tick "Activate" to "Yes".
You can write your message in the box provided and save your settings. The message will only appear for guests and members that are not logged in.
Be aware however, the popup message can be disabled for your guests and members if they are running a popup blocker on their web browser.

Re: A Message Just For Visitors?
Thank you, runawayhorses, I appreciate your taking the time to respond. But I don't think a login popup is going to work for me. I use (and advocate the use of) popup-blockers, so having a popup would be kind of hypocritical of me. And it's not how I want people to experience my forum at all; I want newcomers to see most of the content without hassle. I just want to make sure that this message is seen by first-time visitors, which is why I'm trying to make it some integral part of the index page.
Right now I have my visitor message in the "Homepage Message" (Display-->Homepage-->Generalities), which I use to display a daily quotation. It's just ugly and distracting and I don't want my registered users to have to look at it (or myself, for that matter).

Re: A Message Just For Visitors?
The only other thing I can think of would be an announcement. However those can be seen by anyone who connects to the forum, even members once logged in. So it's not only guests.
However if you're interested in this go to ACP --> General --> Messages and Emails --> Announcements.
The announcement can be fixed or scrolling so it does have its benefits.

If you create a widget, you can set permission will only guests can see it.
Press and uncheck all boxes except for guests.

Re: A Message Just For Visitors?
I'd considered that, Derri. But thanks.
SLGray, that's exactly what I want to do. Let me see if I can find the permissions button for widgets... can you tell me what page it's on in the Admin Panel?
