Adding the mention @ in Java doesn't work

I have copied and pasted the information from this page https://help.forumotion.com/t140358-make-the-mentioning-system-easier-to-use into my javascript and followed all directions to change the var to 0.
The enable Java management is set to YES.
Everything looks like it's okay but the link won't work.
The @ is next to the persons name. You can click the @ and it will go put the persons name in the box you type a message. But, when you send the message, it is not highlighted for them to get notification.
I also put in the java for "mention" to go in the quick reply and it's not showing up there.
Thanks for your help.
