Sorry, but this e-mail address is invalid.

One of my new members is trying to register to cflo.forumotion.com. When he tries to verify his password for the first time the error message is, "Sorry, but this e-mail address is invalid." His email address is of the form xxxx@freeshell.org. I have know this person for years and I know his email address is correct. 1) is freeshell.org blacklisted? 2) Does the application allow a ".org" extension in a valid email address? 3) does the software use a regular expression to determine validity and it doesn't expect only 4 leading characters? 4) something else?

Forumotion has a blacklisted email list and does not allow registration with that type of email.
Then you must contact a forum staff by private message and ask them to check that email in the office to see if it is blocked and the office will tell you if it is, and whether or not it can be used.
Note that also the same email that you have put in your message comes out as blacklisted.

To answer to your question there is no special problem with org in general
but some email domains that don't respond are blacklisted indeed and we have to whitelist them manually
The email you inform us by pm is now whitelisted and can be used
