Turn Signature Visibility On/Off As A Member?
Signature Options for Members
First topic message reminder :
I have a member on my board that does not use a signature, nor does he like to see the signatures of everyone else. As such, I think it would be great if a feature were added to where each member could choose whether or not they can see the signatures of others.
In other words, the visibility of signatures could be turned "on" or "off" for that particular user. All my other members enjoy seeing the signatures, as well as using them, so I would be hurting the majority in just disallowing signatures from the forum as a whole.
Yet, why should this one member have to put up with the sigs if they annoy him and make his forum experience more difficult and make him less likely to enjoy my site?
What do you think? I'd love to have your feedback.

Re: Signature Options for Members
voting yes. I like to see sigs when i`m posting in a discussion, but when i need to go back through a post to find info/moderate it, the pages seem endless with super long sigs.

Re: Signature Options for Members
Voted no as it's unnecessary. On my forum I don't allow links in signatures or images due to misuse.
But every forums different. The best thing to do is set some rules about signatures, such as short text is okay or signing you name also okay.
Maybe you do or don't allow your members to put their website links in signatures and some forums don't.
If you allow images maybe make a limit to the image size.
But no I don't think it is needed. Note that we already settings to set it, so that only logged in members, not guests can view signatures.
If you want to set it that way.

Re: Signature Options for Members
Thanks for your input, Andrea. =) I do allow signatures, because it is not abused on my forum and I do have a size limit. However, as stated in a post on the first page, the majority of my members want and use them and only one member does not.
As such, I like to appeal to the majority of my forum's members--but I do not think one member should have to see signatures that he doesn't want to see when it takes away from his role-playing experience even though he is the only one who is bothered by it.
I appreciate your votes, all of you!

Re: Signature Options for Members
Hi Leah, I thought you were a moderator on Sanket's forum. Which I visit quite a lot as a guest as the posts are quite interesting.
I know there, they don't allow links in signatures because a lot of members use this to promote their website or for affiliate links.
But I see from you also have your own forum. There is no real harm in putting your website link in your signature, if it's your own website.
The problem is that some people abuse it,and sign up on a forum for the sole purpose of promoting their site, and never post anything.

I voted yes as I can find a real benefit for it.
Too much movement in the graphics in a signature can be disturbing for people with epilepsy and other neurological disorders.

Re: Signature Options for Members
I have voted yes. I have just had a member ask if we have the option to turn signatures off. As it stands moving images cause them health problems so I am going to remove my current signature for their benefit. Shame as I really like what I have chosen
Re: Signature Options for Members
I'm voting No. I run roleplay forums where it's required that members include links to their character's various information in their signature. They can either make their own or use the default template provided, but it has the be there. If any member could just turn off signatures so they couldn't see them that would cause problems and those members would then have to be constantly asking others for their information which would distract from and disrupt the flow of the roleplay.

If including specific info in signatures is required with your specific forum. Then it could easily be made a requirement that signatures are not turned off.
Allowing this option for all forums would not change the rules of your forum, that stipulates that there is a requirement to use a signature to include vital info for all members.
Or it could be set in the ACP, who has the option to use this function,. For example, Members, Mods or Admin
Re: Signature Options for Members
Our solution is we will hide the whole signature content (display:none), and in case our users want to see it, they simply click on signature icon
